I am looking to pick up this truck in addition to my TL. It has 63K on it and is in fairly good shape. It is the quad cab 4.6 V8 w/ a performance chip. It has 4x4 too. What should I look for on this truck? I drove it and it seems mechanically sound, the tires are good, brakes were good and it drove straight. I took it in on trade and can buy it for a very good price, but I would like know what these trucks are common for having issues with. Thanks! ---

My rule of thumb for buying a used Dodge is: It should be 2/3 to 1/2 of the price of a comparable Ford or Chevy. Expect transmission problems at some point, but even with a complete rebuild / replacement you are still cheaper than a comparable Ford or Chevy. Front end ball joints, drag links, tie rod ends wear out fast, but still cheaper than… ---

It is a pretty solid truck. Obviously it has been towing a 16’ RV trailer, but it was an elderly man driving it. My next step is to run a carfax on it. Anyone have a hook up for me? ---

Rule of thumb: Don’t buy gas dodges especially anything below 5.7l. ---

Dakotas are great trucks. I just sold my 99 with 175k on it and it was still going strong. And they do not have trans problems, i work at a trans shop and have only had a couple come in over many years. I cant say that for the ford or chevys. The gas mileage wont be so great , the fords and chevy get better mpg. The only thing i can think of is the some of the 4.7s did have head gasket issues. now i have owned one in an 04 ram and it didnt have any problems and had plenty of power. It would tow a open car trailer and heavy b body cars with no problems. ---

I love all this useful information. Every company, no matter what, has an issue with each certain vehicle, whether a tranny on a dodge truck, or leaking valve seals in a head on a chevy, or PITA maintenance on a ford, you’ll never be able to tell what could happen in the future. The truck could take a total shit on you in a week, or it’ll last forever, or have a need to be reasonably repaired here and there. Don’t forget dodge trucks are so shitty they only sell millions of them. Your best bet is to go to a specific forum to find info on the truck.
