The acceleration rush deflates during the extra thousand revs to the indicated **7500-rpm redline.** No doubt because of the direct injection, the flat-four revs far more lustily than any non-turbo Subaru, but the sound—basically that of an Evinrude outboard chasing smallmouth bass—is typical for a Subaru flattie.

3500 + 7500 = 11,000 RPM

> According to Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh, Subaru has confirmed it will build a turbocharged version of its Toyota-direct-injection FA20 engine (the one in the Subaru BRZ). That’s great news, right? Well, yes. Kind of.

> Of course, Subaru has not yet confirmed it will build a corresponding turbocharged BRZ. But since the company has said the BRZ is the only car in its lineup slated to get the FA20 — for the time being — one can only assume that a turbocharged version will power that particular car, no? That’s just straight logic. At least, you know, for the time being.

> When asked how the two cars differ, the Scion folks tell us that the BRZ is about stability while the FR-S is about agility. The word “understeer” has surfaced in initial reports on the Subaru BRZ. The Scion doesn’t understeer. Its cornering balance is neutral—bravely neutral for a car that will be sold to young buyers. Scion claims that the only changes to its chassis are slightly softer springs and stiffer dampers.
>
> Scion has certainly succeeded in making the FR-S agile. From the quick steering to the alert chassis, the FR-S responds to driver input in a way that reminds us of the Honda S2000. Holding the stability control button for three seconds removes the safety net. Although the chassis is neutral, it will slide should you turn the wheel abruptly or stomp on the gas mid-turn. Lift in the middle of a corner, and the rear end will step right out on you. It doesn’t do so in an “I’m going to ruin your life” sort of way; it seems more to say, “Hey, you sure you know what you’re doing?” In low-speed corners, power oversteer is easy to achieve. The tail swings predictably and delicately. The low weight—we estimate it’s around 2800 pounds—means the FR-S regains its composure without any drama. Akio Toyoda says of the FR-S, “[It] responds to good driving skills.” If you don’t have them, you may want to get some training—or leave the stability control on. Young drivers whom Scion courts should know that the FR-S is nothing like the front-drive, nearly error-proof tC. If you don’t know what you’re doing behind the wheel, the FR-S will make you look dumb.

Theres a big article about the car in the Feb DSPORT Mag. its actually quite good. They were hinting about the sti version coming out about a year after the scion version is out. i bet they want to wait and see how the sales goes.

The turbo drifting clip was Gushi driving again, I can only assume it’s a combination of promotional filming and testing for the new drift competition car.

> “The FR-S is an amazing display of Scion’s ability to produce an affordable performance vehicle. Until now, the Scion tC has been the main platform for motorsports and racing. We’re excited to announce that Scion Racing and GReddy Racing have teamed up to create the ultimate FR-S drift car for the 2012 Formula Drift season! Make sure to keep your eye on Ken Gushi and the Scion Racing team, who will be piloting the FR-S in the upcoming season.”

Gotcha. I remember reading that Lexus would have a version based on a slightly stretched chassis and would be etched as a “baby lf-a”. Either way it’s a gorgeous car and I’m excited to see it in Detroit lol.

I’ll never buy one, but an RWD sport compact, cheap shitbox is going to get a big following in the dude-bro, boy racer, sticker loving, Initial D-curb jumping, douche bags out there.

Forgive me if there was already a thread, but I kinda see this car making a name for itself. How long has the 240 been out of production? What else is out there in the “4cyl” RWD market? Miata/MX-5? That’s all that comes to mind.
