you hear this all the time from the drivers who know it all… shut up stupid!!! but it can also be used for drivers who sing on the c.b . there is nothing more annoying than somebody singing the star spangled banner at 2 am while your on the turnpike.

a professional driver should be able to jump right in a truck and drive it with no problems there all the same just some have more gears then others

i disagree … all trucks are different. there are no 2 trucks alike. example the 2005 western star i drive is completly different than the 1999 i drove.the gears are the same pattern but it shifts at a higher rpm due to the 99 had a cat engine and the 05 is a mercedes benz. from the outside its the same internally completly different.

i’m not looking to get my CDL but i’ve always been fascinated with trucks (and planes, trains, boats, etc.). what do these terms mean? (Conventionals and Cab Overs and day cabs) obviously the “style” of truck, but can you tell just by looking at them? also, someone told me you don’t have to use a clutch when shifting the “big rigs”…is this true? how many gears do they have?

Coventional is the long nose. Cab over is the engine underneath you means rougher ride but easier turning radius.
Day cab is used for city or short runs has no sleeper.
9/10/13 speeds. tri-axles can be up to 18 gears. also thier is Automatics
Its possible to shift with out the clutch.
Typical Coventional with 53’ trailer with measure in at near 70’ :eek:
up to 80,000lbs
10 Brakes and 18wheels Fully loaded takes atleast a football field to stop at 55mph

heres the good and bad of the clutch. no clutching saves your knee’s but slipps the clutch 1/16 each time .its not alot but over time you get a glazing and your clutch is shot not to mention the added stress on the gears. in the years of driving ive done my left knee is about shot. good side to the clutch is you can control skidding on ice,and save the gears . i use the clutch in rev,1st,and 5th that about it . 2nd 3rd 4th 6th 7th 8th, optional. heres the kicker. georgia overdrive which is when your going down hill you put the truck in neutral and drift. this is used when your truck has a slow set speed limit.
