Had some intermittent “smoking” issues last week and then again on Friday evening. Decided it was time to do some investigating. I was suspicious and now those suspicions were confirmed. Pulled the front bumper and noticed some oil dripping from one of the lower intercooler clamps. Noticed some on the upper too. Pulled some clamps and a pretty decent amount of oil came out. Started some basic disassembly.

Hellion Power Systems lists these as Turbonetics units but nothing as far as a model. I’ll have to do a little more research / learning before ordering rebuild kits. If anyone has any experience, input, suggestions on this process, I’m all ears. I notices shaft play in both and not sure how much is too much. They don’t hit the side of the housing but come close. I’m sure I’ll know more as I open these up. Thanks.

Upgrades not in the budget right now. I’ll just wait till I lose control leaving cars and coffee and smash up the front end. Based on what I see upon disassembly, this is a t3 / t4 rebuild kit. Bunches out there for various costs. Any suggestions?

It would be cool if you rebuild it. Upgrades are fun but im curious how much it costs to replace the cartridge and seals dyi’ing.

Sell me the car back…

It would be best for the tune/engine to rebuild what you have.

How could I? This is the most reliable moded car I’ve ever owned. 🙂

Found some rebuild kits and one even mentions a “stepper” gasked to avoid oil leaks.

Not sure I’d be happy with stepping down on the power scale. Swap the VG30DETT into the Mustang and go all F & F.

I’m sure the maintenance on a P car is a walk in the park. I’ll wait until the make a TT V8 variant, then I’ll think about it. Wouldn’t be able to plow through crowds in a Porsche. People would just slide over the hood.

Z is reliable, just high strung and finicky. Give me 20K for the Mustang and we’re all good.

If the fins on the compressor wheel have not touched the housing at all they can be rebuilt easily. Based on the amount of oil you have coming out of that thing I’d say the dynamic seal/thrust seal behind the compressor cover is junk, but you may have a problem with too much or too little oil feed and or blocked oil drain thats pushing the oil past the seals. Keep in mind everything is usually balanced, so you must mark the position of the shaft/wheel/nut BEFORE you take it apart bc you must put it back together the exact same way. The journal bearings are only held in place with little snap rings, and a very slight side to side shaft play is normal even with new bearings. It should be easy to tell what the issue is when you have it apart: if the thrust/dynamic seal is blue and destroyed and possibly the compressor cover, you aren’t getting enough oil pressure or volume. If everything looks okay but there is oil in both housings then it’s probably an oil drain issue.

I was out on the boat most of the holiday weekend haha. Another thing that would smoke both turbos like that with obvious bearing damage is a pretty good boost leak.

So let me ask this. It’s about a 50/50 split out there regarding rebalancing but I agree with you. It makes sense. That being said, is there anyone locally offering these services or am I looking at weeks of back and forth shipping?

Many have argued Garrets are component balanced and not assembly balanced, making balancing a moot point.

Some more pics from Sunday dis-assembly. Lot’s of oil on the turbine side. One thing I did notice on the one compressor wheel was what appear to be balancing grind marks, which leads me to further believe these were component balanced. I still think the oil change had something to do with this.
