the only way you get anything is if you volunteer, other than hotel and food vouchers. United kept us in Washington for 24 extra hours coming home from Cancun, we bitched and got them to give us a USAir flight or it would have been even longer.

If he wants to risk being in the airport a whole day he can go there and ask for standby/other airline options earlier.
