Thought I’d post up here to get the team some exposure/interest. We are a group of students (mostly engineering) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and compete in the Formula SAE west division. It’s an international engineering competition between Universities that allows us to apply what we’ve learned in the class room into a practical environment. FSAE has a number of set rules (mainly for safety reasons). The basic formula is 4 wheels, open wheel, less than 610cc and a 20mm restrictor plate. This leaves a lot of room for development in kinematics, aerodynamics and powertrain (cars can be forced induction, NA, 4 cyl, twin, single cyle, etc). There’s also no minimum weight so building with weight in mind is critical. Actual competition consists of dynamic and static events. Static events include design judging, cost report, tech inspection and a marketing presentation. Dynamic events include acceleration runs, skidpad, autocross, brake test, and an endurance event. For more info on the team, check out:

UOIT is a very new school and the team has only been around since 2007. We consider ourselves as kind of an under dog with a pretty small budget (6th cheapest car this year!). Other schools have been competeing since the 90’s and budgets range anywhere from 10’s of thousands to 100’s of thousands of dollars. Here’s a time line of our cars:

F2007:
-very overbuilt
-13" wheels
-stock gixxer 600
-rookie of the year winner
-steel tube frame

F2008:
-similar to 2007
-much lighter
-improved geometry

F2010:
-carbon fiber/aluminum honeycomb hybrid front monocoque
-steel tube rear frame section
-gixxer 600
-full aerodynamic package
-13" wheels
-the chassis/aero package on this car won OCE last year

Most of our senior members graduated last year so it was like starting fresh all over again. The team decided to do yet another complete redesign, but this time to keep it much simpler. The idea was to design a simple, smaller, cost effective chassis that we could use as a “base car” for the upcoming years. Each year we will keep a similar format but make slight improvements in kinematics, aero, remove weight, engine tuning, etc… For F11, we decided on:

F11:
-single cyclinder Kawasaki KFX450R
-steel tube frame
-10" wheels
-pull rod suspension (bottom mount)
-inboard rear brakes
-composite half shafts (student final design project)
-aluminum rear subframe
-multilink rear suspension
-sheet steel uprights
-light weight and cost effective

_ **Huge thanks to all our sponsors, particularly our title sponsor, Durmach Tooling** _

Next post, the build process…

sounds sick but don’t you have to show a significant change in chassis from year to year? I thought a car couldn’t compete more than one year and one of the criteria was the chassis to be changed?

You guys make it to Detroit?

Nice looking car and its good to see some more singles I was always a fan of the thumper cars when I was in FSAE.

You have to have a new chassis each year but some of the teams just tweak the designs slighty with their legacy cars (ex. Wisconsin Madison)

They have changed the points break down so fuel economy is weighted more. Expect to see a lot more single cylinders in the near future. Sure they work ‘better’ but they don’t sound like a race car ☹

Right now I am getting an old car from 1990-ish going to test/get data from. No Restrictor FTW, its going to be fast as hell.

Good luck in Germany guys

Ya we made it down to michigan first year a team made it with the car they where building that year. Our standings where alright but we still had a lot of room for improvement. Will RIT be at the U of T Mosport shootout this year?

As far as design changes the team needs to change 30% of the car… from f10 to f11 we changed 100%
All these pictures are from our F11 car, I will update this thread when we start more construction of F12

I wish I still had connections to the FSAE team even for a frame I wanted to build my own car off of the chassis I had a few motors that would be perfect. Yea those damn restrictors really choked the 4 cylinder cars down but without one they def would move out

That’s one thing I wish I would have got involved in when I was at UB. Not for something to put on my resume, but simply for the experience.

Good luck with the build and def keep updating this thread.

Thanks! and yea, as long as the car makes it back by then it’ll be going to toronto (it comes back by boat and has taken 3 months before) otherwise we have 2 older cars up and going to bring

U of T shoot out was on Saturday at Mosport on the go kart track

We had a semi successful day, the car ran all day but we had both charging and battery issues so the car bogged down when we stomped on the throttle. Was real cold in the morning so half the day was spent struggling with traction but it warmed up a little in the afternoon. Still it was a fun day though and our times were not all that bad.

Saw that RIT made it back on time, they were doing fairly well all day

Now we will be getting started on the construction of our f12 car and turn f11 into our driver development car.

Do you guys make your own carbon half shafts? You should make your own muffler too as its super easy to make and you can do what you want with it in regards to length and diameter, etc.

For our carbon half shafts we do everything except for the layup of the carbon tube and curing it in the autoclave, that is done at Multimatic.
We made the moulds bonded in the tripod housings… etc etc.

This year we will probably make our own muffler, the problem is we ended up failing sound the first time in Michigan with a FMF glasspack so we just threw on the CBR 600 muffler and it has stayed on since then.

mind = blown fast
Even with a single the launches are retarded fast after the tires are warmed up.
I believe 4.5 seconds is the average time for the accel run which is 75 meters

This TU Graz from 2009 sort of demonstrates how fast the 4 cylinder cars can accelerate

For a better feel of the Michigan competition here is a video of the fastest autocross time, look for the second lap
