Long story short. A Marine is killed, his mom got his belongings back and wants to get into his Laptop with Vista Home edition. I had a guy try here at work and he was unsuccessful. Any ideas ? ---

Try booting in Safe Mode and logging into the Administrator account. A lot of the time people never put a password on it. Then she can take the password off his user account. ---

Try ophcrack if that doesn’t work I have a few ideas. ---

is there a way you could change the boot to read CDrom first and try to install 98 or will that trash all files? ---

WTF?:picard: You can download Emergency Boot CD which unlocks passwords on NT based systems. Its worth a shot but I think Vista uses a different kernel so you are SOL there as far as I know unless you find one that works with vista. Last ditch effort is use a linux live cd and copy the files you need somewhere and reinstal. ---

Does she want the files or does she want to view his desktop, etc.? If she just wants his files, then a $20 USB cable, connect the hard drive, and plug in to existing computer and grab all files she wants. ---
