I just finished installing the gutts from a vlsd 5spd non abs into my open diff pumpkin ( 5spd,non abs). Everything fit together well with nothing looking out of place. Well I took the car for a short drive, then tried to do a burn out, and well, still doing one wheel peels. My question is : do I need to let the fluid warm up before it locks? One other thing: I used the original axle hubs instead of the ones that came with the gutts. The seemed to fit much better, even though they looked different and had different lenghts. Do any of you think that could be my problem?

Thanks in advance

> the open diff has equal-length output shafts whereas the VLSD’s output shafts are different lengths. Any output shaft set from an R200V should work (S13 HICAS, S14 VLSD, j30, Z32 NA, etc), just make sure you have the same # of holes on your halfshaft as you do on the output shaft

hope this helps

So I should use the shafts that came with the vlsd and not the ones from the open diff.?

why wouldnt you swap pumkins completely

I got the internals for cheap, and heard that you need a different driveshaft or the lenghts will be different if you change the hole pumpkin. So I swapped gutts, it fits great.

Just wondering how warm the fluid needs to get to lock the wheels?

Never had a vlsd before. I know the car reacts different around corners now, but doing a burn out it still does the one wheel peel. Why? Fluid not warm enough, or need different output shafts(still using open diff output shafts)?

It does not have to be warm , assuming that you jack the rear of the car and spin 1 wheel , both should spin in the same direction . If it takes time to do it , the lsd is worn out but if it spins the other way , then you dont have lsd .
That is the best way to find out .

If you think about it logically…

the hotter the fluid gets, the LESS effective the VLSD will be.

The higher the temperature, the less viscous the fluid becomes… simple simple chemistry. lol.

</div>

^^^ actually it’s more complex chemistry…
the silicon viscous fluid in the VLSD coupling gets heated by the slipping created by the different speeds between axles and as a result becomes more viscous and sticks them together

however the viscous fluid can get worn out with time and overuse and lose it’s effectiveness which might be the problem here

cloudzero’s point is still valid tho.

The axles will lock up quicker when the overall fluid temp is lower because the friction generated leads to a greater temperature differential.

I definitely notice my vlsd locking both axles much more quickly and more easily when the car (read: gear oil) is cold vs. when it has been driven for some time. (not to say it doesn’t work when the car is warm… it does - just not as readily.)

Well the problem is fixed. All I had to do was use the output shafts from the vlsd pumpkin and everything worked. Best $100 spent ever. Install only took 1 1/2 the first time and 45mins the second time.

NO MORE 1 WHEEL PEEL
