# VW Rabbit

it’s not 100%, but there is supposed to be a 50 state legal diesel version here in 2008. it is not going to called a TDi, because it is going to be a pretty big jump in technology. it is going to be common rail (finally). they pretty much have to with honda and maybe even chrysler getting into the diesel passenger car game around the same time. there is even a rumor that BMW may start sending diesels our way. it is going to be like 1982 all over again.
the “base” 2 door rabbit actually is a pretty good deal IMO. my friend just paid roughly the same amount for his cobalt that has similar options. 5 years down the road which would you rather own?
although it should not be branded with the rabbit name. the VW PR people made the mistake of asking me my opinions on the new rabbit at waterfest (giant VW/Audi show in jersey). I let them have it.

please,before you compare prices look at each one… hell… the base model corrola doesnt even have power windows and the interior looks like you payed 15 grand for the car…never been in a civic…but i am expecting the same. The rabbit in alot more classier for a 15K car. It feels as if your driving a car that cost 25K or more.

Do they make the Rabbit without power windows and crap like that? Because then you might actually have chance at having a VW without problems… 😛

I like the new Rabbit. I have the chance to work around them so maybe Im bias. With some bigger wheels and lowered they wouldnt be that bad of a DD.

😢 The german hatch that has an MSRP under 15k and makes 150hp and 170 ft-lbs and is an IIHS best pick only gets 30mpg highway! :cjerk:

a warrantied brand new car for 15,5xx isnt that bad imho, i test drove one and obviously its nothing special, but for the price i think its justified.
not a fan of the rabbit name though, i dunno

In fairness, the Rabbit at the price you mentioned comes with alot more shit on it than the base Civic or Corolla.

I don’t know what newer Corolla you have been in, but the interior is top notch. Great materials, well made and faultless ergonomics.

And I don’t know what Corolla YOU’VE been in, but the base Corolla doesn’t have leather and wood grain trim, as that picture would lead some to believe.

I dunno.
Alot more shit like…Climate control and a decent stereo (comparing to the honda)
I like the rabbit but between the rising fuel costs and the competition It would not be my choice until it comes in diesel or TSi
interior is ok.
I wasn’t a big fan of the mk4 interior
Civic looks pretty inside too
seats look comfy but the wheel is ugly.

Hmm, this thread has me interested. A little comparison will give me something to do while nursing this hangover…
Goober’s first pic was an LE Automatic Corolla which has a base MSRP of 16795, the second pic was an S Automatic Corolla which has a base MSRP of 16630. The base/manual/bare bones Corolla CE has an MSRP of 14785. The Civic DX comes in at 15355. The 2 door bare bones Rabbit has an MSRP of 15620.
The rabbit has 4 wheel disc vs the other two’s disc/drum combo. Standard air conditioning, cruise control, power locks, remote keyless entry, all of which the other two do not have. The Civic has a couple of things that the rabbit does but the Corolla does not, like power windows.
It acutally kind of looks like you get what you pay for. The rabbit has the most features but costs the most. Gas mileage is the same tradeoff. The rabbit doesn’t get as good of fuel economy but is by far the torquiest.
The rabbit has the longer warranty. 4 years vs 3. Yikes, the Rabbit is assembled in Brazil, vs US for the other two.

The civic and Corolla have two extra doors, 8-11 more mpg’s on the highway, and virtually guaranteed reliability. Similarily equipped, they’d basically be the same price.
I guess for me it would come down to which one I “like” better.

The prices I quoted are for absolute base models, including manual transmissions.
