I do agree that the main function of a timepiece is to, yes in fact, tell time. There is, however, another layer to the whole mega-expensive watch phenomenon. Part of it truly is a status symbol, (“look at how much I paid for this, ooohhhh.”), another part is the mechanical side of, well, mechanical watches. The technology that goes into making a watch that can be accurate to +/- 2 seconds per month is simple when it comes to quartz watches. Most quartz timepieces are in fact much more accurate than their mechanical counterparts. To do the same thing with a mechanical watch (driven by a wound up spring and regulated by a geartrain) is a great feat, most mechanical watches are considered accurate if they stay within +/- 6 seconds per day. With most of the ultra high-end timepieces, materials also play a key role. Gold, Platinum, Palladium, high-end ceramics, etc… all bring the price up as well. Most people that purchase these watches are drawn to them by one or more of these facets. For me, it’s a combination of mechanical technology and fusion of materials. Just my $0.02. ---

Yeah I pretty much look at it like driving a supercar. Sure you can buy something way cheaper that will probably be more reliable in the long run and do a better job of getting you from point a to b but what fun is that? Watches are like cars, people may buy them as a status symbol or out of appreciation for it’s ability/abilities and the effort that goes into making it. Since that’s said and done that seems like an excellent deal for that audemars piguet. ---

I don’t follow JLC prices too closely but that’s not a gyro so the price seems fairly reasonable for the complication. Shit JLC’s are notoriously well priced due to their manufacturing division (they make a lot of movements for other co’s so their in-house movements cost less). I don’t follow JLC much at all but I figured a great condition Tourbillon for $26K seemed like a good deal considering you see most hedging into the $50k range. Now I just wish I could find a reasonably priced minute repeater. ---

those are both ugly as sin IMO. I have almost a carat of diamonds in my watch and didn’t pay anything close to $26g’s. What a joke. Guess I just don’t get it lol ---

I have an sti but when i tell people i spend 30k on it they think i could have had something nicer with leather seats, a sunroof and alot more classy… Its all in who you ask. I personally wouldnt want diamonds in a watch. ---
