yes i read the article and have known about it for about 3 years now as well they know its a possibility however they don’t really know as to when or if they even have to plain for anything its just precautionary for them so in my eyes they know its a possibility but saying that you know something because its a possibility and you have a few facts to show you that to me isn’t really Knowing something however im glad they plain ahead for this stuff i don’t wanna big rock landing on me. So they know some things not nothing thats my fault for saying nothing but they wont know for sure what is going on until it passes by earth the first time

Apophis is 460 feet long. I’m not impressed. I’d bet that this is nothing new, but rather is just the first risk like this that we’ve identified.

and you know how many asteroids and comets HAVE hit the earth? either way, like ilcisdead said, this isn’t something to just be like “meh, it probably won’t hit us, this has happened before and it missed”.
That’s what a 100,000 people or so in NO said and look where they ended up…

How so? The people who stayed in new orleans and survived admitted that they’ve dealt with hurricanes that were supposedly going to be “catastrophic” before, and they felt katrina was going to be no different. Of course there were some people who had no way of leaving, but whatever. Either way, they ignored the warning.
This asteroid is just a warning. No reason to say things like “it probably won’t hit us”.

agree all joking aside its not something to panic about but warnings are always something to take seriously. Like lake effect snow warnings mean its seriously time to start thinking which parking lot to go drift in when the time comes

First, 800 something feet, not 460.
Second, 800 feet wide doesn’t sound like much until you realize that a 150ft wide one made a crater 4100ft in diameter.
a 1-2 mile wide one made a crater 52 miles in diameter.
The problem is the Earth is mostly water, so chances are if it hits it would an ocean. As much as I hate most things that come out of California, I wouldn’t want to see it get hit by 50 foot waves for an hour.
NASA seems to be on top of it. There is no sense doing much now, because if you do try to nudge it off course you could end up pushing into the keyhole when if you had done nothing it would have missed.

Maybe if it was 10 times or 100 times less likely, but I don’t believe there is a lesson to be learned from Katrina that can be applied to something 500,000 times less likely to occur.

The moon gets hit way more than the earth, so why would I go there?
And I think some of you are completely missing my point. Dos said it won’t happen. I said it could. A lot of people in new orleans said it won’t be that bad. It was.
Warnings aren’t meant to be doubted.
