# Well that sucked... STI repair content

So my springs came in today and Drew, Greg, and Mikey all came over to help get them done. Driver side front was easy to get out (broken spring), both backs came out without too much trouble, but the pass. front was a bitch. Both lower bolts for the strut were seized in the hub fit. We had a hell of a time getting them out. Finally ended having to just bash them out with a mini sledge hammer. One of the bolts mushroomed a little, but we grinded the bad threads off and I still have enough thread engagement to be safe.
So we finally get it out and get everything back together, lower it down and go to drive out of the garage and there is a nasty binding/grinding noise in the front pass. side. Apparently in our battle to get the damn suspension out the axle spline pulled out of the hub and it went down hill from there.
We got the axle out and sure enough the end was all busted up. The balls were out and there were some not so nice chunks of metal laying in there. Well it was 8:45 and we didn’t have a whole lot of time. So we called up advance auto and they just so happened to have one of the more expensive axles in stock. Thankfully they are only a minute up the road so we made it just in time. Got the axle, threw it in, and she is now back pounding the pavement. There is still a light noise in the rear, but I am pretty sure its either a little rust on the brakes, or the springs are just settling. Nothing binding or anything like that.
I want to give a big thanks to Drew, Greg, and Mikey… without them helping I would probably have a few dents in my doors, or maybe some busted knuckles from my concrete walls.

Fixed STI springs, broke axle in the process, had a shitty day but got the project done in the end.

I know exactly how you feel. Putting my G6 back together the other day we had the solenoid on the starter break apart and the lower ball joint pinch bolt broke. On top of that, the rotors rusted beyond recognition from sitting for 3 months and the A/C compressor was leaking dye out of the seams. LOL

advance axles suck just ask yetti. should just have the oem on rebuilt at xecel in schnectady its usually just as affordable as that god knows wear it was manufactured junk.

I wouldn’t say that they are any worse than any other axle. It also depends on the application too.

Its not an advance axle. They didn’t have the cheap one in stock so we had to get the more expensive name brand. Its a GSP axle…

ive seen yetti go through ones that cvs binded before installing. I have ussed some in other applications that failed within weeks. All replaced with oem or oem rebuilt and are still functional to this day. I used a gsp in my audi 4000 it failed. rebuilt oem one it lasted. its all blah from them.

Usually if you drop it off in the early morning ive had it back by noon-1pm they dont fuck around and get shit done there

yea, but we didn’t find out it was broken til 8:45 tonight… lol. And with the heat in the upper 90’s tomorrow I really didn’t want to take the bike to work.

Get the axle rebuilt, swap it back in and return the new one you bought due to “binding” issues. 😛

According to the forum I don’t turn wrenches, but a friend told me that if you put a nut on the bolt, and beat on the nut rather than the threads, it might save you some trouble.

You are correct, and we did that on the other bolt and it started to mushroom the nut…lol just wasn’t a good night but either way we managed to get the job done without half-ass rigging anything.

Noooo, Subarus only need spare motors, not axles.
\<– Never went through an axle w/ allllll the abuse my car saw, worst of which was prolly the stupidly self-lowering coilovers made by K-Sport.
