Been busy the last couple weeks, getting ready for my trip down to Tail of the Dragon, Nashville, National Corvette Musuem.

C6 wheels in the rear always looked sunk in due to offset, so I grabbed some 1” hubcentric spacers and got them bolted up.

The unthreaded bullnose tips on the factory studs needed to be trimmed as they were interfering with the insides of the wheels. Sick colors bro

Got everything all bolted up, no vibrations, rode perfect. Squeezed in an oil change too, 2nd one since buying the car.

Next day at work - kid in a Buick sideswiped me as I was leaving work. Right as I had got the front bumper fixed, too.

uckily, the damage was fairly superficial…we settled without a claim, as I was confident I could get it looking exactly as before, if not better. BEFORE:

I did not want to alter the factory paint work if I didn’t need to, so out came the wet sanding supplies, clay, compound, and polish…

Popped the headphones in, cracked a fine cold PBR, and GOT TO IT

So with the exterior looking better again, I turned to this annoying clunk in the front end that had been bothering me. It occurred when the wheel was turned - and with the suspension getting loaded/unloaded.

I had already replaced the sway bar end links front and rear, so the search continued. Found that the sway bar bracket bushings were looking sorry and original

The new bushings fit great and compressed nicely with the bracket torqued down. I also added the supplied grease to make sure things were lubed up.

Still no dice on the noise - so the list of “while I’m in there” continued. C6 Z06 shocks at all 4 corners. Definitely necessary since the old shocks were 16 years old, 110K on them. The shock mounts themselves were also worn, and included with the new stuff. At just $250 for all 4 new shocks, why not? I also dusted off my old “nifty fifty” 50mm 1.8 fixed lens!

[![https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7689/27455389703_1f2d5c9604_z.jpg](https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7689/27455389703_1f2d5c9604_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/HQ93PZ)[\_DSC5187](https://flic.kr/p/HQ93PZ) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

Oddly enough the C6 top mounts were different, slightly angled, and they didn’t fit the C5 chassis, so I swapped the C5 mounts over onto the C6Z shocks.

[![https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7105/27967228262_d22e8a2d48_z.jpg](https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7105/27967228262_d22e8a2d48_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/JBnmAJ)[\_DSC5188](https://flic.kr/p/JBnmAJ) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

Rest of the shock install went quick and easy. Next up, while looking over the front suspension, I had noticed the belts were looking sad. Out they came

[![https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7281/27789201820_e734fb39b7_z.jpg](https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7281/27789201820_e734fb39b7_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/JkCVxj)[\_DSC5184](https://flic.kr/p/JkCVxj) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

New parts. I used Goodyear Gatorback belts on my 6.0 LS BMW with great luck, but I couldn’t find them for a C5 application on any website. Some closer looks on Rockauto revealed that Continental listed some belts that had that telltalle cross hatch pattern on the belt ribs. Decided to pull the trigger

I wasn’t expecting to have to replace the idler and tensioner pulleys but they were worn - and the bearings were noisy. Quick trip to the store for some new parts:

[![https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7520/27455324843_ec9f40a56d_z.jpg](https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7520/27455324843_ec9f40a56d_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/HQ8HxH)[\_DSC5200](https://flic.kr/p/HQ8HxH) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

After allllll that stuff, I finally tested out a theory - that the fiberglass front spring was binding on the aluminum control arm after the front leaf spring bolts had been removed. An old tire sacrificed its life and offered some insulating material. Cutoff wheel + tire means ultimate smokeshow!

[![https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7309/27456134654_38378a10ac_z.jpg](https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7309/27456134654_38378a10ac_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/HQcSgY)[\_DSC5194](https://flic.kr/p/HQcSgY) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

So I compressed the spring on each side, greased up the side that contacted the spring, and slid it in. SUCCESS! Noise fixed. The spring now moves freely with no binding against the control arms.

Next up: passenger window regulator, LMC5 install, and S2000 seat mounting revision.

I thought that I’d have to buy new seatbelt receivers to match the new C6 belts, but by some miracle, the S2000 receiver accepted the C6 belt buckle perfectly.

Got tired of the clutch pedal going to the floor, so I picked up a Tick Master cylinder to replace the OEM junk.

Installation was not difficult, just really uncomfortable. I ended up removing the driver’s seat and laying on the floor on my back with my head up by the pedals.

I guess I can scrape something together. Not really been doing much

Been driving it around a bunch. The front ride height is a bit “high” for my taste due to the thick piece of rubber I put between the spring and the control arm to prevent contact. I can probably replace it with something thinner but just as durable to drop it another 1/4" or so.

The cutout butterfly valves have started rattling ever so slightly at a certain RPM (around 1000) on warmup, which is annoying, so I removed them to inspect and figure out how to fix it. It will probably involve a bit more fab so I may leave that to a winter project.

[![https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8187/29538814960_999111c5b3_z.jpg](https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8187/29538814960_999111c5b3_z.jpg)](https://flic.kr/p/M1f9z7)[1471655753617](https://flic.kr/p/M1f9z7) by [Norbert Ogiba](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nogiba/), on Flickr

If you recall these were V-Banded to the exhaust midpipes, so with those off the car there was a big gaping hole in each pipe. I still wanted to drive the car while the cutouts were removed so I ordered up some flat 1/8" thick, 3" diameter round plates and welded those to some v-band rings to make blockoff plates. Welds aren’t pretty but are getting better and don’t leak.

My buddy came over with his recently turbocharged, all original (and definitely patina’d) '92 SE-R for some work. This thing is super cool and spins the fronts pretty well on 7lbs. Trying to convince him to come out to the road course with me.

FYI Continental bought the belting division from Goodyear so you bought actual Goodyear belts that are now labeled Continental. Saw you a few weeks ago in OP and dropped you a text but it didn’t go through so your digits must have changed.

I got excited at first when I saw the pics load of the SE-R, thought maybe you had picked up something else to tinker on. I had one for a short time before being t-boned in it, but it was fun while it lasted. You planning to vinyl wrap the entire car or what is the purpose of the mock-up with it?

I want to wrap the whole thing, the paint is sandblasted pretty well on the front bumper cover and around the wheel well areas. The hood, roof and trunk have minor weathering that might be too difficult to polish out. I’m just sick of black and looking for something to do.

I have also been thinking about picking up a cheap POS to swap and work on for fun, not sure what yet. boxy Volvo, CVPI P71, E34. Something with a welded diff, 5.3 sloppy turbo kit, auto trans.

I like the Volvo idea as well…I’m not exactly sure why, given my experience with my S70 (the dude that bought it from me is laying down just under 300whp with it). Guess I should’ve gotten a 240, swapped in a B6304 out of a 960, thrown a snail on it and made Supra noises…

You’ve damn near convinced me to find a C5, or C6 after reading through all of this though. Just as well, I’m creeping up on forty and getting softer in the mid-section, which are just a few of the prerequisites for ownership 😃
