# What if you had access to...

An enclosed, heated, well lit, garage space (bay actually), hand tools, air tools, shop air, lift, jacks/jackstands, experienced/knowledgeable “tech” for an hourly fee? Would you utilize such a place? How often?

I know what you’re saying and it’s been thought of many times but the insurance on such a business would cost the customer just as much as paying a tech to do the job for you.

So are you saying it’s like a hourly rental place to do your own work, with techs to “assist” when necessary. I’m kinda confused.

I’ve priced this out, and the insurance is the biggest downside. Until I know how often and what type of customers I’ll have, I can’t be certain if it’s even financially viable.

If you’re thinking of opening up such a business I HIGHLY recommend that you look into the cost of the liability insurance that will be associated with it.
It’ll behard to profit.

Not likely because I like to work at my own pace. But, I have 2.5 car garage that I can heat up with kerosene and a pretty decent selection of tools.
BTW, people have discussed starting a business like this before and I believe the insurance pretty much kills any chance of being profitable.
EDIT: Wow, the dream crushing is fast in here today.

even if the insurance worked out and I didn’t have a garage I couldn’t see myself paying more than $20 an hour.
how likely somebody is to use something like this is going to be based on the cost which you haven’t listed.

No kidding…
This wouldn’t necessarily be a business unless there was extreme interest in the future aspects of my plan. For now, I was considering opening a co-op. Which would make each person liable for themselves (to an extent).

You’d be better off finding people interested and have them sign a lease to use the space for 6 months at a time.

If you’d like, I can post the whole cost structure. But there is a significant break down I didn’t want to get into just yet. It depends on how much help you receive from a tech, what tools you borrow, how long you have your car there, whether or not this is even a business for profit. If it’s a co-op, the price structure is only dependent on how many people are a part of it.

maybe you can make money off doing a web live cam feed…Its always interesting watch people put cars on lifts that have no idea what they are doing…

This is what I’m thinking. Plus, this way you can vet people to make sure they aren’t idiots that will drop a car off a lift and break/lose the tools.
