But holy shit. I appreciate this guys enthusiasm, but he’s woefully outgunned:

CLIFFS @ post 4

1:26 MidShipCivic: I have the GTR transmission already I want a 4wd car so thats why I’m gonna do. Just like you want Rwd 😉
11:26 sprocketbash411: what’s that engine out f?
11:26 sprocketbash411: _of
11:27 MidShipCivic: 90-93 Infiniti Q45
11:27 sprocketbash411: so it’s got a front drive dif on the oilpan?
11:28 MidShipCivic: A certain version of this engine does but I’m not using that to drive the front wheels.
11:28 sprocketbash411: …
11:28 MidShipCivic: let me finish
11:28 sprocketbash411: haha
11:28 sprocketbash411: i am.
11:28 sprocketbash411: 🙂
11:28 MidShipCivic: I’m gonna move the engine 9.5’’ behind front center and use an R200
11:29 MidShipCivic: because that front differential mess is a pain for the oil pan
11:29 MidShipCivic: I know people who have that special ‘’ cima 4wd engine ‘’
11:29 MidShipCivic: it’s really rare
11:29 MidShipCivic: and not worth the trouble
11:29 MidShipCivic: they took picture for me
11:30 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/Vh45DE/DSCF1481.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/Vh45DE/DSCF1481.jpg)
11:30 sprocketbash411: are you going to make your own oilpan?
11:30 sprocketbash411: i can’t imagine that the engine is short enough to move it that far behind the xmember.
11:31 MidShipCivic: According to me ( w/o any technical drawings yet) moving the engine 9.5’’ ( roughly half the length)
11:31 MidShipCivic: I’ll be able to run two CV axles in front of it
11:31 MidShipCivic: w/ an intermediate shaft
11:32 sprocketbash411: are you going to use fwd suspension?
11:32 sprocketbash411: from a sentra or max/alt or something?
11:33 MidShipCivic: I haven’t examined the S13’s front wheel assemblies but I think it can be machined
11:33 MidShipCivic: for me to do something about that
11:33 sprocketbash411: eh, not really
11:33 sprocketbash411: you’re better off using fwd nissan stuff
11:33 sprocketbash411: all the cars i mentioned are mcpherson
11:33 sprocketbash411: so that’s your best bet
11:34 MidShipCivic: yeah of course
11:34 sprocketbash411: the gtr is double wish
11:34 MidShipCivic: that wasnt the only thing I thought about
11:34 MidShipCivic: completely removing the front end of the car and starting with a short/long arm suspension
11:34 MidShipCivic: the GTR read’s VSS off it’s front wheel knuckles
11:35 MidShipCivic: I dont wanna go through the trouble of finding that
11:35 MidShipCivic: but the rear diff has VSS so thats my other reason for using it up front
11:35 sprocketbash411: that is incorrect
11:35 sprocketbash411: there is a speed sensor on the side of the GTR trans
11:36 sprocketbash411: but r32 is cable
11:36 sprocketbash411: but you should be able to swap a sender form a KA in
11:36 sprocketbash411: but your thinking too far in to it
11:36 sprocketbash411: you’re
11:36 MidShipCivic: that is true I looked at the ETS diagram
11:36 sprocketbash411: yeah, that’s for the atessa and shit
11:36 sprocketbash411: and abs
11:36 MidShipCivic: so I need it
11:37 sprocketbash411: nah
11:37 sprocketbash411: don’t complicate it
11:37 MidShipCivic: it will operate with out it you’re saying?
11:37 sprocketbash411: by trying to use the atessa
11:37 sprocketbash411: you will kill yourself
11:37 sprocketbash411: you will need an entire skyline, essentially
11:37 sprocketbash411: the atessa computer is in the trunk
11:38 MidShipCivic: how do you understand it so much?
11:38 sprocketbash411: what do you mean
11:38 sprocketbash411: i read the whole service manual, essentially
11:38 sprocketbash411: i was thinking about making it AWD when i built my 240
11:38 MidShipCivic: so did I
11:38 sprocketbash411: also
11:39 sprocketbash411: the hydraulic pump for the center dif is mounted on the rear pumpkin of the GTR
11:39 MidShipCivic: I know about all that
11:39 MidShipCivic: but the whole skyline needing thing ?
11:39 MidShipCivic: ehh ?
11:39 sprocketbash411: don’t bother with the atessa, at least not yet
11:39 MidShipCivic: I have to understand it now
11:39 sprocketbash411: if you don’t hook anything up to it
11:39 MidShipCivic: I’ve been comtemplating about this for a year now
11:39 sprocketbash411: it will lock the center diff at 50-50
11:40 MidShipCivic: that defeats the purpose of what it is though
11:40 MidShipCivic: I want it operational
11:40 sprocketbash411: well, good luck man.
11:40 sprocketbash411: seriously
11:40 sprocketbash411: that’s a HUGE endeavour
11:41 MidShipCivic: what because of the electronics?
11:41 sprocketbash411: you can buy a whole gtr subframe
11:42 sprocketbash411: and use that pumpkin
11:42 sprocketbash411: then you will need to source the atessa computer
11:42 sprocketbash411: and buy a harness, or make your own
11:42 sprocketbash411: you can get abs knuckles from a later 240 for the rear
11:42 sprocketbash411: hi
11:43 sprocketbash411: -hi
11:43 sprocketbash411: srry
11:43 MidShipCivic: lol
11:43 sprocketbash411: for the front if you use maxima knuckles
11:43 sprocketbash411: you can get the VSS there
11:43 sprocketbash411: but seriously
11:43 sprocketbash411: why bother?
11:43 sprocketbash411: lock it at 50/50
11:44 sprocketbash411: if you’re really ambitious you can rig an incar adjuster that modulates pressure from the PS pump
11:44 sprocketbash411: because that’s how the atessa does it
11:45 MidShipCivic: why bother ?
11:45 MidShipCivic: It’s what I want it’s not what the car is soley based on
11:45 MidShipCivic: driving 4 wheels
11:45 MidShipCivic: it has to be just as smart
11:45 MidShipCivic: or I have nother better than my eagle talon tsi
11:46 MidShipCivic: I know the gtr has aftermarket ets controllers
11:46 sprocketbash411: yeah, but you still need all of the hardware
11:46 MidShipCivic: yeah [www.skylineowners.com](http://www.skylineowners.com)
11:46 MidShipCivic: lots of parts outs
11:46 MidShipCivic: from those forums
11:46 MidShipCivic: I’ve looked that over
11:46 sprocketbash411: i’m not saying it’s not possible
11:47 sprocketbash411: but i don’t think you fully grasp the logistics of what you’re trying to do.
11:48 MidShipCivic: I haven’t completed planning
11:48 MidShipCivic: but I want the system to work in the car and I know it can be retrofitted I can get the parts
11:49 MidShipCivic: well I just have questions on your practices that’s all
11:51 sprocketbash411: ok, i won’t try and talk you out of it, but it’s NOT an easy task…
11:51 sprocketbash411: i don’t know if i would attempt it. and this is the ind of shit i excell at.
11:52 sprocketbash411: the payoff is not worth the hassle.
11:52 sprocketbash411: you will def need an atessa controller
11:52 MidShipCivic: but It’s the reason I got this car
11:52 sprocketbash411: because the balance of the car is goig to be nothing like the gtr
11:52 sprocketbash411: you are going to have to spend HOURS on the skidpad just tuning your atessa
11:53 MidShipCivic: I know that
11:53 sprocketbash411: and that’s assuming you can even get a user programable atessa computer
11:53 sprocketbash411: chances are they are just chipped
11:53 sprocketbash411: also
11:53 MidShipCivic: whoa
11:53 sprocketbash411: you need to get the G sensors as well
11:53 MidShipCivic: there are ETS controlles like piggy backs
11:54 MidShipCivic: BEER replaces it entirely
11:54 MidShipCivic: I know about the G sensors by the hand brake
11:54 MidShipCivic: [http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/?action=view&current=ETSATTESSAsytem.gif](http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/?action=view&current=ETSATTESSAsytem.gif)
11:54 sprocketbash411: yeah
11:54 MidShipCivic: I’ve gone over that
11:54 sprocketbash411: how old are you?
11:54 MidShipCivic: I’m not as old as you
11:54 sprocketbash411: and how much money do you have for this?
11:54 MidShipCivic: I’m a 22 years old
11:55 MidShipCivic: Are you doubting me ?
11:55 sprocketbash411: not entirely
11:55 sprocketbash411: but i have seen a lot of failed projects
11:56 sprocketbash411: that people don’t realize what they are getting in to.
11:56 MidShipCivic: uh huh
11:57 MidShipCivic: Like you’ve bought that 3 series
11:57 sprocketbash411: what do you mean?
11:57 MidShipCivic: I bought a 240
11:57 MidShipCivic: I never owned one before
11:58 MidShipCivic: but I bought it just for that engine drive line combo
11:58 sprocketbash411: sure, the chassis of the car makes no difference
11:58 MidShipCivic: I’ve considered almost everything thought it may sound impractical
11:59 MidShipCivic: it’s going to happen
11:59 sprocketbash411: if i were in your shoes, here is the plan of attack i would take
11:59 MidShipCivic: though_
11:59 sprocketbash411: get the engine in the car with the gtr xmission
11:59 MidShipCivic: right
11:59 sprocketbash411: and get it running in a rear drive configuration
11:59 sprocketbash411: then add your front dif
12:00 MidShipCivic: wait
12:00 MidShipCivic: sto
12:00 MidShipCivic: p
12:00 MidShipCivic: whats the reasoning for that
12:00 sprocketbash411: haha
12:00 sprocketbash411: because this is the kind of thing you’re going to need to do in steps.
12:00 sprocketbash411: or not
12:00 MidShipCivic: okay
12:00 sprocketbash411: try getting it running AWD
12:00 sprocketbash411: no atessa
12:00 MidShipCivic: oh I see
12:00 sprocketbash411: how well can you weld?
12:01 sprocketbash411: because you are going to need to build a front xmember
12:01 MidShipCivic: I have a Miller dynasty 200dx
12:01 sprocketbash411: you are going to have to build new front frame rails
12:02 MidShipCivic: but I’m still practing and I’m going to invest in a JD2 bender soon
12:02 sprocketbash411: you are going to need to build a dif mount
12:02 sprocketbash411: does the RB bellhousing bolt to the block?
12:03 MidShipCivic: Negative several people have used aluminum metal stock and adapted it
12:03 MidShipCivic: the 300zx flywheel bolts on
12:03 MidShipCivic: to the back of that crank
12:04 MidShipCivic: and since it shares the same spline it’s good to go for that part
12:04 MidShipCivic: for 300zx clutches vs GTR tranny
12:05 sprocketbash411: but that makes the bellhousing longer
12:05 sprocketbash411: you’re going to need to machine the bellhousing down
12:05 MidShipCivic: yeah they milled it as well
12:06 sprocketbash411: a bellhousing adaprter is not all that hard.
12:06 MidShipCivic: mmmhmm
12:06 sprocketbash411: but do you have access to a mill?
12:06 sprocketbash411: it doesn’t need to be CNC’d you can do it on a bridgeport
12:06 MidShipCivic: I might have some questions about drafting since I’m taking that class
12:06 MidShipCivic: I have several shops in my area
12:06 sprocketbash411: are you going to pay someone to do it?
12:07 MidShipCivic: so I won’t be doing anymachining
12:07 sprocketbash411: i see.
12:07 sprocketbash411: i hope you legitimately have 15k to dump on this
12:07 MidShipCivic: lmao
12:08 MidShipCivic: Have you weighed that RB engine ?
12:08 MidShipCivic: heres what I got when I weighed the VH45DE

OIC 😛

Sounds like he’s just looking for answers. Seems like he’s done _some_ homework :gotme:

12:08 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/Vh45DE/VH45DEweight.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/Vh45DE/VH45DEweight.jpg)
12:09 MidShipCivic: are you familiar with Susprog 3d?
12:10 MidShipCivic: I practice using it but as for now I cannot determine any control arm lengths or mounting points yet
12:10 sprocketbash411: i have not weighed it
12:10 MidShipCivic: I don’t know where to start but I know my suspension kinematics a bit so alot of trial and error will occur
12:10 MidShipCivic: I expected that
12:10 sprocketbash411: i have not used that program
12:11 sprocketbash411: i have never ventured outside of stockish suspension geometry
12:12 MidShipCivic: I can’t see me doing all of this and not going double wishbone
12:13 MidShipCivic: So logistics as you say ( dont use that word so much :-P)
12:13 sprocketbash411: why don’t you just build it from scratch
12:13 sprocketbash411: it will probably be easier
12:13 MidShipCivic: I was thinking about drilling out spot welds and removing the front end
12:14 MidShipCivic: ^ had that in mind
12:14 MidShipCivic: um
12:14 MidShipCivic: your driveshaft alignment with the laser leveler
12:15 sprocketbash411: yeah…
12:16 MidShipCivic: how long did it take you to get it perfect ?
12:17 MidShipCivic: did you even use the leveling part ?
12:17 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Picture.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Picture.jpg)
12:17 MidShipCivic: I was going to place this in the flat part of my valley to get something worked out
12:17 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Picture174.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Picture174.jpg)
12:17 sprocketbash411: the level part doesn’t matter
12:18 sprocketbash411: just the direction
12:18 sprocketbash411: also, go off of the rear of the crank
12:18 MidShipCivic: I see
12:19 sprocketbash411: you do not know that that flat part is constrained to the driveline
12:19 MidShipCivic: I was going to do that as well
12:20 MidShipCivic: I’ve asked many people
12:20 MidShipCivic: [http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2214941](http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2214941)
12:20 MidShipCivic: but
12:20 MidShipCivic: seeing someone in action like you
12:20 MidShipCivic: I had to ask
12:21 MidShipCivic: seems honda-tech is down
12:21 MidShipCivic: but there is a big fabrication section
12:21 sprocketbash411: well
12:22 sprocketbash411: the component of gravity at 9.81COS(theta) will be far outwighed by forces exerted on the engine during braking, cornering and accelerating
12:23 MidShipCivic: This is in reference to the drive shaft?
12:23 sprocketbash411: no
12:23 sprocketbash411: your oil question
12:23 MidShipCivic: oh you can see it
12:23 sprocketbash411: yes
12:23 MidShipCivic: for some reason I cant
12:25 sprocketbash411: well, no offense, but it’s questions like that that make weary about your ability to handle this
12:25 MidShipCivic: I don’t do things like this for a living
12:25 MidShipCivic: it’s just something I’m gonna try
12:26 MidShipCivic: its not simple
12:26 MidShipCivic: but I’m doing everything I can to know
12:26 sprocketbash411: well, i think you might be running before you’re walking
12:26 MidShipCivic: I’m trying not to be ignorant about it either
12:26 sprocketbash411: sure.
12:26 sprocketbash411: but what’s your background
12:27 sprocketbash411: what you intend to do is far more difficult than what i am doing
12:27 sprocketbash411: and i have an extensive background in stuff like this
12:28 MidShipCivic: I’m an automotive student graduate and I’m currently in a local college
12:28 MidShipCivic: all my life I’ve thought about things like this
12:28 MidShipCivic: I’m just giving it a shot
12:29 MidShipCivic: I’ve had tons of ppl trying to tell me I can try things like this
12:29 MidShipCivic: every starts somewhere
12:29 MidShipCivic: one\*
12:29 sprocketbash411: i think you should be less concerned about details like getting the atessa
12:29 MidShipCivic: well I keep it in mind
12:29 sprocketbash411: and get the car driving
12:29 MidShipCivic: if it’s brought up
12:29 MidShipCivic: at first I thought you meant
12:29 MidShipCivic: you know
12:29 MidShipCivic: ‘’ if I wanted 4wd ‘’
12:29 MidShipCivic: just for it
12:30 sprocketbash411: well, i really don’t see you getting a diff in FRONT of the engine
12:31 MidShipCivic: moving the engine 9.5’’ rear ward from shock tower centerline
12:31 MidShipCivic: it will fit
12:31 sprocketbash411: are you going to cut out the firewall?
12:31 MidShipCivic: of course
12:31 MidShipCivic: engine length is 19’’
12:31 MidShipCivic: it would be a front midship now
12:32 sprocketbash411: just build your own chassis.
12:32 sprocketbash411: that will be easier
12:32 sprocketbash411: build a tubeframe and drop 240 bodywork over it
12:33 sprocketbash411: that will be far easier than what you are trying to do
12:34 MidShipCivic: if thats what you call it the door frames I was going to keep
12:34 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Chassis%20work/s1bilder20-11-07008.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Chassis%20work/s1bilder20-11-07008.jpg)
12:35 MidShipCivic: the two frame rails running in the center I was going to remove
12:36 MidShipCivic: I just dont see the S13 frame as stiff
12:36 MidShipCivic: especially mines
12:36 MidShipCivic: from 89
12:36 sprocketbash411: is that an audi motor?
12:36 MidShipCivic: for this combo
12:36 MidShipCivic: yes
12:36 sprocketbash411: in what?
12:37 MidShipCivic: I forgot what it’s called it was one of this group b rally cars
12:37 MidShipCivic: those\*
12:37 sprocketbash411: ah
12:37 MidShipCivic: [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Chassis%20work/s1bilder141207002.jpg](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v169/C-Zero/FMS13/Chassis%20work/s1bilder141207002.jpg)
12:38 sprocketbash411: that’s hot
12:40 MidShipCivic: it was on a porshe forum some guy was putting a 5 cylinder motor in a 944 with mk3 supra r154 transmission
12:41 MidShipCivic: and that was linked
12:42 MidShipCivic: so am I still sounding impractical?

cliffs: guy’s trying to do his first real build. this involves:

mating a q45 engine to an rb26 trans and putting it MID-ENGINED in a 240sx, converting the front to dual wishbone suspension, cutting out the firewall and moving the engine back far enough to run a r200 dif in front of the engine for an awd setup, converting the whole car to use the GTR atessa system inc. the dif pump, g sensors, wheel sensors, atessa ECU. Then custom tuning the atessa computer on a skidpad to work with his setup, and tube framing the car.

He just needs to learn how to weld and use cad, and once he figures out if it’s bad to mount an engine on a slight angle.

he also just asked why the output shaft on the trans doesn’t spin as much as the input shaft when he turns it by hand.

he also asked me where i got the cardboard template to make my transmission tunnel:

As long as you make sure it’s expensive enough to keep tension on the rope.
