# Why are motorcycle motors more than car motors?

How come motorcycle motors cost more than car motors? Has anyone noticed this? Look on Ebay for Harley-Davidson motors and they run upwards of $2k. Why is this? I would think that Motorcycle motors would be like 1/2 the cost of a car motor since they have like 1/2 of what a car has. :gotme:

YOu pay for micronization and materials. Same way laptops are more expensive than desktops.

not only that but typically car motors are used and in much higher supply than motorclucle motors… and if a motorcylce crashes most of the tie the motor is shit, thus leading to a small supply of used ones… whereas when a car crashes most of the time the drivetrain can be salvaged… thusly driving the price down

cars=transportation Bikes=toys, while many cars are used as toys, most are bought initally as transportation. Bikes start as toys and end as toys, and toys will always cost more.

Thats your opinion, but a car engine starts out costing more than many bikes, but ends up cheaper. You can talk about materials and small parts, but it comes down to the economy of toys.

actaully its sheer numbers and tolerances
alot more cars are produced than bikes
bike motors especially high performance ones are also built to better tolerances

bike redline 15k car redline 5k… bike = higher performanc…
and many times bikes are wrecked with 1k miles on them and are totalled by dealerships and the motors have virtually no miles on them with scratches on the case covers…
rx3 is right with his laptop/desktop compro…
and also… show me a stock (newer) 1.2 liter motor that puts down 100 hp with 2k miles on it for less than 2k dollars…

Bike engines tend to be built to much tighter tolerances. With many providing more power per liter than your average car engine. See also: Laptop/Desktop reference above.

I would also say it depends what you are looking for. Harley stuff is exspensive,well because its harley crap. Now if you wanted a 90’s crotch rocket motor you woldnt spend near the amount. Hell I have 3 suzuki gsxr motors forsale, some built some stock, and there is noway I could get over a grand for them.

Yep :). I have TONS of pre 1995 gixer motors/parts that I’ve collected over the past couple of years.
