My last final is thursday so I’m finally going to have some time to work on my long term project again. The car is a 91 Z28. I bought it last winter in NY. I originally bought the car just to get the moser 9 inch and FAST XFI. After looking at it for a few minutes in the guys field I realized how clean it was and made a low ball offer on the whole car and got it for a very good price. So far we’ve made fairly good progress. The engine bay is painted with black chassis paint and the rest of the car has been shot in primer. All of the body panels and doors are painted in the final paint color and need to be buffed when they are installed. Applied flow just finished the machining and fabrication work on the motor. Now I’m just waiting on the special flywheel to show up. Should be about a month, by the time I have that the cage should hopefully be installed and have some progress made on installing and modifying the interior. anyway its all aftermarket suspension - spohn coilovers - PA racing tubular front end with manual rack - flynbye 13" brakes with 4 piston calipers - S&W triangulated frame connectors and short T arm - PA chrome moly adjustable panhard and LCAs - stock 12" gm rear brakes w/ hawks pads and slotted rotors - STB and wonder bar - S&W 10 pt cage to be installed - racecraft 2" drop spindles drivetrain - 408 w/ AFR heads, custom cam, forged bottom end, shaft rockers… - built T56 - Accel standalone EFI - Moser 9" with 4.56 gears (need to remove spool and install locker) - might spray it I have a nitrous kit, but it might be more or less pointless Anyway the car should be capable of 10 something quarter mile depending on my skill as a driver. Yes I know a turbo 400/350 would be better for quarter mile only performance, but I very rarely get time to go racing so thing thing will spend most of it’s time on the street. Got a good deal on a brand new fast XFI setup including the single plain manifold and I know absolutely nothing about carbs. ---

yes those are spohn coilovers front and rear. the previous owner had a 383 and built 700r4 in the car ---

My friend and I made some good progress installing the cage today. Go the main hoop, cross bar and rear legs fitted and tacked into place. I’ll post pics later. ---

Spent most of the day working on the car with a friend of mine. We managed to install the halo and the legs down to the floor from it. Major pain in the ass. Last photo is my wife sitting on the box for the plasma cutter waiting for us to finish up at 8:30 ---

Why do drag cars have such fucked up cages? Is there a challenge to put as many bends in a piece of tubing as possible? ---

The driver also has to fit in there too. Those 2 factors combined with the amount of impact energy they have to withstand is why there are so many bends and tubes. Trust me it’s a pain in the ass getting it to all fit together and not look like ass. ---

I trust the fact that you have no idea how that cage would react in a wreck, like the a-pillar downtubes collapsing into your leg. Cages aren’t there to “not look like ass” they are there to keep you alive, two holes in the dash aren’t going to hurt anything and will allow for a proper downtube. Not to mention the fact that none of the tubes connect to each other in nodes to distribute the force of a crash. ---

that cage will never pass a n.h.r.a tech . or any tech for that matter it just looks unsafe ---

It came with the car so that is what I installed. I spoke with the guys at S&W at length about how I’m installing it in the car and consulted friends that have built sub 8 second cars. They all agree that the way I’m installing it is just fine. I don’t plan on putting the car on it’s roof or spending any amount of time at the track with it. I was originally planning to use a 6 pt, but have the 10 pt kit and the tube is 1 5/8 instead of 1 3/4 so I have to install the entire kit or buy another one. Either way thanks for the concern but I’m good. It’s only getting a 500 hp motor so I would be surprised if it goes much faster then a low 11.
