# Windows Mobile n00b questions

So what’s windows mobile? Obviously it’s a little version of windows for handheld devices, but what can/can’t you do with it? Can you do more with it than a palm OS device, similar to PC vs Mac?
I think I’ve seen screen shots of WM6 with an RD icon. Can I connect to my desktop at home with a WM device?
I use [Money Manager Ex](http://www.thezeal.com/software/index.php?Money_Manager_Ex) to track my spending. It’s a really basic program. You can copy/paste the install directory to a flash drive and run it off of that. No kernel integration. (Excuse me if I’ve completely misused that phrase.) Would I be able to copy/paste the install directory to a WM phone and run it on that?
I’m guessing that the above is adorably ignorant and I can only install windows mobile specific software, correct? Where do people typically get software for a windows mobile device? What are some popular apps?
I guess I’m just fishing for anyone with some free time to spit some random facts out about it.

i think u can remote desktop, its in terminal services client i think
there ya go, thats a pretty random fact that i cannot backup, if i can get my hands on my roommates phone ill try to confirm

In essence, it’s a built-up Palm-like interface (Or stripped-down Windows for pen computing) that mainly does personal-information-management tasks. It (WM 5.0) comes with “pocket” versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - and can handle e-mail, etc. Phone versions can even sync with corporate Exchange Servers, for e-mail and other Outlook stuff when you’re on the road. I’ve heard of remote desktop - but haven’t used it. I wind up using my work Exchange Server instead.
Other Windows Mobile apps exist - places like [Handango.com](http://Handango.com) sell them. Others you can find apps for free - [cnet.com](http://cnet.com), tucows, etc…
And yes, you can handle media (MP3, AVI/WMA via Windows Mobile Media Player; others handle mpeg’s), so you can listen/watch if you have some free time.
But in general, expect to have a price premium for WM PDA’s vs Palm ones - WM PDA’s generally require more memory and processor speed to handle the OS. They also tend to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in.

Windows Terminal Client = RDP. It works wekk enough for me to do shit on my desktop while in class 🙂
