I don’t really see why we shouldn’t legalize pot. However, I wouldn’t want to set a precedent that it’s OK to overturn these things. Next thing you know, we’ll be wasting tax payers dollars trying to prove that cocaine doesn’t have any harmful effects. That’s an exaggeration, of course. ---

I dunno, I don’t think simple possession of small amounts of any drug for personal use should get you locked up. I just don’t think something being illegal is enough of a deterrent to people doing it, I think it’s more a personal choice, and at this point the war on drugs has failed and we’re throwing good money after bad. Call me a business nerd but the ROI is not there and it’s time to adopt a new plan. Put the money into education to help people make the right choices, rehab for those who didn’t and WANT to change, and focus the police and jail resources on the bootleggers, gangs, foreign interests and organized crime syndicates that are getting rich off of the stuff. ---

While I would argue that MP/B240 states his case in a somewhat structured and well thought out manner, I also instantly assume that anyone that displays any of the following symbols publicly (and not in obvious jest) are of below average intelligence: The ICP Hatchet Man A pot leaf, the number 420, or other marijuana paraphernalia Anything to do with Tupac Sarah Palin (and to a lesser extent, conservatism in general) This is a working list. Getting busted with small amounts of weed won’t get you locked up anyways. I do agree that law enforcement of weed selling/possession is a waste of resources. I am not a supporter of cocaine, heroin, meth, etc… I do think we need to continue to enforce the laws on these drugs strictly. ---

Yeah I’m out of the mainstream on this one but I say everything. If coke, heroin, meth, etc. went legal, as long as the prices were kept artificially high by taxes, you take the money out of the hands of the criminals and give it to the government to enforce everything else, and I don’t see it having that much of an effect on usage rates. When you can’t get rich off distribution any more it cuts off the funding for crime. Personally, I would take weed over a ton of things that are legal. Maybe I’m putting too much faith in people to make good choices for themselves. ---

Do people really not do drugs BECAUSE they’re illegal though? I mean, there’s not too many places where EVERYTHING is legal for a control group but comparing to things like teen drinking and prohibition, outlawing something actually increases consumption and abuse, because people are doing it for the wrong reasons. ---

just look at the number of americans that are addicted to prescription pain medications. They’re not the kind of people that would otherwise be addicted to drugs. It just so happens that it’s easy to come across, and it makes them “feel better”. One of my high-school buddies’ mother takes prescription drugs sort of often. I wouldn’t say she’s an addict, but she does abuse them. My buddy has an rx for xanex, and I’d be over his house and his mom would come up, knock on the door and just snag a few from him to help her fall asleep. You’re not going to find her on the street trying to score pot, but if it’s upstairs in her son’s room, she’s gonna get some for herself when needed. Cocaine is basically just an intense stimulant. It’s like coffee x1000…or a redbull x500…or a 5-hour energy x250… So why not, instead of drinking a whole bunch of redbull or energy shots, just do a quick bump of coke, then bam I am awake. ---
