The interior alone is worth going with the M5.

While I won’t deny that the M5 is undeniably sexier in all aspects (sportier bumpers, wider wheels, suede all over the interior pillars and headliner, all black interior), I can’t say that interior is THAT much better. Mine is a 2001 540i Sport and I wouldn’t change anything about the interior except the stupid A/B/C pillars and headliner to black. They’re gray/white, with the rest of the interior is black.

I have all black leather interior, black dash/console, heated and bazillion way adjustable seats, power rear sunshade, manual rear sunshades, and it’s more luxury than I need. All I’m missing is the PDC and the 16:9 navi system, which is kind of unnecessary anyways with today’s smartphones. It does look sexy as shit though.

Many of the early E39 M5s came with the goofy half screen/cassette setup anyways.

Correct…5 series is tolerable, E36/46 is garbage.

The seats, dash, headliner, center console trim, door panels, steering wheel, gauges, and trim are all completely different in a car with full options. Trust me, it’s noticeable. I wouldn’t even consider an M5 without the “full leather” option, the dash wrap alone is worth it. Though there is almost no difference between the lux M5 and sport M5 seats other than the way the leather is cut. The seats themselves have more bolster and adjustment than the terrible park bench 540i seats.
