Friend's alternator died today

So alternator dies right after he got off exit 23 on I90. He lives in Syracuse. So I guess instead of buying a new alternator he’s went out and purchased himself another battery, is going to charge both batteries and switch off while driving back to Syracuse where apparently he can get an alternator cheaper? :crazy I predict this winding up in him being stranded because both batteries died on the way back.
