Garage to house door code, Amherst

Mines a steel skimmed door with foam/wood/steel internals. I assume it’s fire-proof. Never had self closing hinges and when I replaced all of them with oil-rubbed/venetian bronze hinges, I didn’t use self closing ones either. In the spring/fall, I prefer to have the door open to the house if I’m in the garage.

Are you a madman? An open door between the house and garage? You might as well be lighting off pyro in your living room while having a squirt gun filled with gasoline fight.

Completely the opposite, Jay. When I’m lighting homemade pyrotechnics and playing with gasoline filled super soakers in the house, I prefer to have the garage door SHUT.

What is the benefit of self closing hinges…in any one persons opinion. Why are they “required”…?

I assume that the self closing hingess are for when you run your burning ass out of the garage the door will close to protect you and you don’t have to worry about closing it. I guess that makes sense…

Which begs the question. Why run into your house if the garage is on fire?

(I am purposefully skewing this logic as I don’t understand the need for these hinges in a residence.)

I will need to replace my door when I remodel my garage. I will use a steel skinned door but fuck those hinges. I carry long shit through that door all the time. I’m not chaining it open.

That might be due to the fact that if you have not altered the contruction of the home in any way, it is only subject to the building code that was in place at the time it was built. Kind of like how now the code requires wall contruction to be with 2x6’s instead of 2x4’s, this doesn’t affect existing structures unless you decide to put on an addition…in which case the addition needs to be build with 2x6 framing.

That is the exact reason

Fire rated doors will (should) have a tag on the hinged edge specifying. Self clising hinges are for as stated above. Local codes may supercede state / federal codes. Not really an issue unless it’s part of new construction or if doing yourself. Type and rating appears to be up to you. If you think the fire department can make it there in 20 minutes, go with the 20 mkn door.

^ LOL…fair enough.

I’m done hijacking for today. Thanks for the feeback fellas.

Wife woke me up a few years ago to say there was smoke downstairs. I jumped out of bed, ran down and smelled electrical, told her to call 911. Before I could get my pants on APD was at the door, fire department about a minute later. Amherst taxes really do pay for some good response times so maybe I’ll just skip the fire door entirely ;).

I don’t know if they make a 60 second door.
