NYS Highway "Parking Areas" are now "Texting Areas"

So they’re going from pickle parks to texticle parks?

except they don’t stay on the east side and they don’t only shoot at each other…

Dude, it’s Chippewa, C’Mon! You’re going to have to do better than that. You can’t tell me that chippewa doesn’t reek of bad news every weekend. It’s pretty damn clear these days that if you go down there on a weekend, chances are you will see some sort of trouble throughout the night.

Boy this I am sure will piss off a lot of the truckers getting handies in those stops with all the added attention

yes… it’s acceptable that the people of Erie county cannot see the ball drop on new years eve in the center of downtown without being the victim of a random shooting.

besides, you’re making my point. I agree there is bad news on Chippewa just about every weekend. All the more reason to deploy our limited law enforcement resources to a small area where violent crime can almost always be found.

Sounds a lot better than paying thousands of dollars to put booster seats in tahoes to maybe catch 1 out of every 50 suburban teenagers texting on their phones while driving.

we don’t need 6 figure babysitters cruising the streets

Because they don’t already have a bigger police presence down there as it is…

This is Delaware and Chippewa BTW. They spent however millions of dollars for this and you want them to get even more cops down and get them off of the busy roads that people frequent. Brilliant!

I disagree, but that’s just my opinion. I hope you never lose a significant other to an automobile accident where the other person wasn’t paying attention to driving, but you might understand my point then.

“To serve and protect” … our revenue stream…
Edit: I bet $1, 95% of the observations will be on womens skirts.

1: the timing of these two specific things are completely different. you dont need a lifted tahoe at night past midnight to see who’s texting. Not to mention that its really only 2 nights a week that chip isnt a ghost town.
2: you can find people DWT all over the place, not just in once concentrated area. similar to DWI, but with this its everyone from teens alone in the car to soccer moms with a van full of kids to housewives with escalade esv’s to people driving work vans or trucks DWT. In fact, DWT is arguably worse than DWI because its so widespread due to people thinking “I would never swerve, I always pay attention, I’m the best there ever was!”.
3: unlike DWI, you can’t set up checkpoints to catch them. if you’re drunk, you cant instantly not be drunk when you see the lights (despite what your adrenaline is telling you). If you’re texting, you have to be really really really really oblivious not to see the checkpoint lights. at which point, you are getting whats coming… Not to mention the people that drunk text WHILE driving…

I’ve got more, but really I’ve almost been taking out more times than I can count by someone deciding to text their bff something super important while driving. I am ALL FOR an increased crackdown.

I bet the Tahoe will also have raised seats inside which will accomplish the same thing. So I wouldn’t just assume a hideous lift kit to give it away.

You’re assuming that the general population is smart enough to put 2+2 together…

Read this people:

“Neither texting bans nor bans on hand-held phone use have reduced crash risk,” Lund says. … “They’re focusing on a single manifestation of distracted driving and banning it. This ignores the endless sources of distraction and relies on banning one source or another to solve the whole problem.”

I should clarify my stance. more people need to pay attention to driving, and less on everything else. I’m guilty of focusing on the texting part of the issue above

It’s sad that they think they “need” a bigger and taller SUV to see. I can see a person in my civic in a lifted truck doing it… Everyone holds the phone up and infront of their face. Not going to make a difference, people will still text and drive no matter what, it’s purely disgusting that I can count over 10+ people a day I see doing this, especially on the thruway, they need to creat a technology that allows you to keep your hands on the wheel and have a text read to you then you respond back.

This is one of the reasons I don’t have a bike anymore. People don’t drive anymore. They use it as time to take care of other things and everyone drives like a self entitled douche that what ever they need to do is more important than the other people.

Story on channel 4 last night about a citizen taking pics of a cop using his “law enforcement laptop” to view some entertainment sight while at stop light, and then failing to go when the light turned green. One supervisor didn’t want to pass judgement because he said he didn’t know if the photo of the website on the screen could be part of some “investigation”. Are you fucking kidding me?! I’m so sick of seeing these cops texting and on their phones in their patrol cars. You can’t enforce the law if you don’t abide by it yourself.

I don’t think any level of enforcement is going to fix it in our new entitlement, “I only think about me” society. There are simply too many douchebags who don’t care what kind of risks they put others in and there will never be enough police around the catch them in the act. When the problem gets bad enough, and it’s getting there fast, the government and NHTSA will step in and mandate a technology based solution that will simply disable text messages while the car is running. And if you think arguing “what about passengers” is going to matter, I’ll ask you what about all the legal uses for high capacity magazines and AR-15’s. They’ll parade remaining family members of some kids killed by texting drivers around the country and push through the new regulations as “must have for the safety of our children”.
