Go on the thruway in a wrx and slam on the brakes when you are inbetween 2 semis and let me know how it goes.
Just because the roof is off does not mean that happened in the crash. More than likely the rescue guys cut the roof off to get the guy out. The driver’s space is pretty much intact. Assuming the roof was still on after the crash, I bet he was ok.

I don’t think the Viper actually looks that bad. It just looks like a lot of body panels were torn off and are now sitting on/in the car. The passenger compartment looks intact. The engine bay is not pushed in too far or anything. Almost looks like the impact happened in the front passenger side leading to a rollover, or possibly rollover first. I think if the seatbelt was being worn, the person lived.
