The Jetta was starting to cost ~$500 each month in labor/parts. For that price I would prefer a brand new car than an '03 MKIV.

Yeah sitting there as long as it did was the death of it for sure, just too many things rotted and going wrong at that point. Before that it was reliable as anything. Sucky thing is that I don’t have the knowledge to fix it myself, so it would end up costing my money if anything went wrong in the future too.
