Most of the things I mentioned, such as independent rear sus, are new to the VW crowd, not an advantage of the GTI over the SI. It is well known that any honda engine will put out more power for a lower cost and more reliability. I am simply saying that it depends what your purpose for the car is.
If you want a daily driver for any conditions, go with the GTI. If you want a car stictly for high amounts of modification and high power, go with the SI.
why would it matter that for a daily compared to a race car? I think with the lsd and 6 speed tranny the honda would be great for not so good weather conditions and still have that 6th gear to cruise at highway speeds for good gas mileage.
for most of the last 2 generations, the volkswagen warantee has been better than honda. Also, when I bought my gti in '02, I was looking into the civics. I found out that the estimated value at the end of 3 years, as a percentage, was greater for the vw’s (~52% vs. ~ 49%). Stock, the vw handles an auto-x course pretty well with the new independent rear.
As far as being in the shop, I think it is more because of the anal retentive nature of the vw owner. Mine has never been in for anything that prevented the car from running, and supposedly quality has improved for this generation.
My vote is for the dub, but really, I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
here are ones I remember reading, I believe car and driver did one too, but I can’t find it on-line, I would pick the GTi over the civic for the sheer purpose of being 6’5’’ I can fit in a GTi a helluva lot better then a civic…
compared to newer honda, vw is not any harder to work on.
as for independant rear, vw may not have had it until just recently in thier fwd cars, but some vag owned car have. i mean old beetles had it, does that mean all vw’s should have too?
either car would eb nice. only thing i dont like about the si, not a hatch.
20% cheaper than the GTI as well . I’m sure VW’s are fun cars to, but they need a rejuvenation of reputation from the past vehicles. Looks like the civic is just a hair faster on 0-60 and 1/4 mile. I LOVE hatch’s but not the new GTI. I would much rather take an older gen GTI over the new style, but… it takes time for me to like new things(especially body styles). Although when I had seen the new eclipse I loved it.
Hmm k well after a long time think about it… I am cancelling the order on the Civic & making the final plans for the GTI tonight - For whatever reason (most likely Honda financing) I will be paying higher monthly payments then the GTI. To boot it will cost me thousands to mod the Civic where as well… GTI needs a 500 $ chip to bring it too approx 250 HP and over 300 Torque
I’d get a GTI, but I also drive a VW and am biased…I like the SI but I think the new GTI is much better as an overall daily driver plus it’s turdbo’ed from the factory and can easily make 250hp with just a chip…also it’s fun in the twisties and both vw and honda have cool commercials :hitit:
