4cyl 4x4

What are your oponions on it. looking to get like a nissan or something of the sort and want good gas and can be built for offroad.
thanks for any help!

My opinions are that it’s pretty faggy. If you’re going for a 4x4 for offroading, get something with some balls.

Most full size silverados get the same or better gas mileage than the 4 cyl colorado. And are only 20k brand new if you get them now.

Suzuki SX4…lol

Oh and whatever you do. Buying a truck thats non American = Fail. We still hold the crown for quality trucks.

the only 4x4 4 banger “truck” that gets good mileage that i know of is a geo tracker/suzuki sidekick. i get 27-28 in the winter using 4wd and going 70+ on the highway with mine.

trackers/sidekicks/samuari’s are great off road platforms. the samuari is the best due to the live axle up front. the tracker/sidekick IFS isnt as good.

everyone else that i know of that has a 4 banger truck with 4wd has sucky mileage. my friend with a 2.4L dohc 4x4 wrangler gets 18mpg most of the time.

to make a 4 banger good off road you have to re-gear it to the point where u loose the 4 banger MPG to get the power you need to actually do something fun with it.

samurai’s can be built pretty sweet and get decent MPG’s but most of the time it wont happen if you want something good at the 4x4 and MPG’s at the same time

I agree with what 91CRXSI.

with the proper tires you can rip ass in mud,etc with a 4banger.

Thanks for the intelligent answers guys!

late 80s/early 90s toyota and nissan four banger’s aren’t too bad. great mpg and they can still handle some decent terrain. and the whole reliability factor also, if you want a four banger truck that’s what i would look at.

i think the worst thing you could buy would be a 6 cyl truck though, at least with a 4 you see a difference in gas mileage. sixes are still terrible on gas and usually don’t have enough power to tow or anything.

4cyl 4wd 5spd Hyundai Tuscon! mpg 20/25… 10yr/100k warranty if ya break anything…

You came to NYSpeed for intelligent answers? :picard:

I beat the piss out of one of these from Frankfurt, to the Nurburgring for 8 laps, then on the Montpellier France at 160kph the entire way (100mph) it was ok, decent on road, probably not that great off road. Some of the Nurburgring laps were very wet and the AWD is very slow and abrupt in it’s delivery.

I work on them too, and they have been pretty reliable.

so what kind of top speed do you want in 4L then. im not a huge off roader but im curious.

i have 5.13FD in the tracker stock and i can barely hit 55 in 5th at redline in 4Low. i would think thats enough. i still can get 30 on the highway in 2H if i behave and go the speed limit.

4 low isnt meant for top speed at all. if you’re going 55 and you’re in 4 low you aren’t seeing any benefit of the low gearing…more hurting stuff then helping it IMO Low range is meant so that you have more power/torque to make a controlled climb over something instead of standing on the skinny pedal and having to shift more often.
