IFL
oh man already got a nice email about my post. it’s really unlike me to say something about a failed party but i was so frustrated about all this i might as well just laugh about it afterwards. i’d love to help them recoup their money and throw a good party for cheap, but they’re probably pissed with me for even saying this much. whatever.
i didn’t mind working with young kids on something but goddamn. yeah it was going to be a little weird playing music to a bunch of 17 year olds, but i figure in a few years those kids are going to be around and about clubs and with the way buffalo is, i might as well try and show them there’s something else other then kiss 98.5 out there musically. besides that generation still cares about music, and i can’t say many past that age seem to anymore. i have a fanbase in that age group too just from opening for certain acts over the years and such, and since they can’t come see me play normally, it’s a good way of keeping that crowd interested.
the guys doing this were just in way over their heads and weren’t sure how to do something of this scale in my opinion. the idea was there, the budgeting was off, and they cancelled it two-three days before the event which meant game over for anyone who was on the fence about coming. even if you’re going to eat it and you didn’t sell many tickets…cancelling is going to save you no money compared to what you’ve already spent. so sure enough, not many showed up. i was pissed because the guy booking me was a friend of a friends, and i figured it was going to be a reasonable house party or something, not renting out the fucking fairgrounds…lol. so i didn’t deal with manager, contracts, none of that at first. and gave them a pretty low price. when i found out they were going to do a 1000+ person show and i was headlining, tickets were 15-25 dollars, i was not thrilled. but i am a man of my word, so i kept my mouth shut, but when they started adding and changing things to the event, i was like alright, i’m not under contract, so either sign one or i’m outtie. to be fair they said they’d pay me well if it went off right, but it wasn’t about money at that point. sure enough, no contract got signed. chae hawk, an artist performing was like, alright they still really need you, let’s just get paid up front and do this for the kids. i agreed, and when we got there, no issues. so these kids aren’t all bad, just weren’t prepared to handle the stress of something this big. telling me you won’t break even until 1000 people just makes me wonder how it all got that out of control. oh and what’s up with the guy creeping on me from Z101, damn homie, pause. stop telling me how much you get paid, for real, i don’t care…lol. nice guy but wow.
i feel bad for the guys that lost money but i was dealing with people who really didn’t even have much to do with the event as a whole, that say they were running the party. their facebook event thing was spammed by kids talking shit, which i’m surprised at, but wonder where that was from. plus when i said i wasn’t performing and to check my web site for updates (since they cancelled), they deleted it. i don’t see how that’s a problem to post - if i’m not booked but i’m billed on a flyer, i need to announce that for MY credibility.
showing up, the person i was booked through, wasn’t even there! granted there were no issues at the party, how’s that for odd? the kid running the party seemed like a nice guy and responsible, it’s just like damn, why didn’t you just contact us in the first place? i feel like they just had too many cooks in the kitchen.
probably gonna be all pissed off about me “talking shit” but i’m just saying i wouldn’t mind working with you guys if you did it proper…it’s just something to learn from. i’m normally not the guy to discuss an event publicly, you guys seem nice, but remember some of us do this for a living and dicking us around a few days before an event means we might be out a paycheck for no good reason, and unable to get something to fill in so last minute. while this might be a entrepreneurial idea gone bad for you guys…this is my career, i take it seriously, it pays my bills and thankfully well…so i get pissed when people dick me around when i give them deals and hookups. i guess that’s the end of that, i’m never working outside a contract again.
either way no hard feelings, i appreciate what you guys are all trying to do - we need better events in the area and new promoters as well. i do feel bad for you guys and if you need help raising money to recoup my team can help…a lot of the older promoters in the game were watching you guys like hawks and unfortunately it didn’t go off too proper. next time put me in touch with the person in charge, and my team will help everything run as smooth as possible.
Yikes. Sucks to hear. One thing I have learned about working on a per contract basis is that there are no friends in business. Always have a contract and get the terms on the ground becuase one stuff doesn’t go right, people are always willing to throw someone under the bus or dick them over.
Buffalo does need more promoters. My friend and I started talking with some bands and bars in the area and looking to start up some events since the scene really has gone down and relies on facebook to promote.
I did think this event was a bad idea from the start not becuase of the actual idea behind of the event but just the way it appeared they were running things.
The fact of the matter is,
this event was aimed at the ages of 15-18 yr olds, right?
well, the sad thing is, if you’re 16 years old, you probably are already hitting up chippewa… So why go to some place that doesn’t serve alcohol?
Teenagers now a days cannot have fun, unless they are drinking, and especially in Buffalo, it’s WAY too easy for them to drink
sad, but too true.
yup. doomed from the start.
STUNNA!!!
