The Washington Navy Yard was placed on lockdown after multiple shots were fired inside a building on the base in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Navy confirmed.
At least four people were injured in the shooting, including one police Washington, D.C., Metro police officer, police said.
The Navy said three shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building on the base at approximately 8:20 a.m., and naval police were treating it as an active shooter situation.
The Navy said a “shelter in place” order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel.
Approximately 3,000 people work in the building where the shots were heard, though it’s unclear how many people were inside at the time of the shooting.
A heavy SWAT and police presence could be seen around the Navy Yard, and a helicopter was circling overhead.
Oof, I know a bunch of people that work there… not good.
Edit: Mass email just got sent out.
Good morning everyone,
There is an active shooter at the Washington Navy Yard. The shooter has not been found as this time but it is believed the person is still in the building. Security has been increased though out the city and flights at National Airport have been delayed. So far they are reporting 7 shooting victims. Anyone living, working or traveling to that area have been asked to shelter-in-place. If you will be traveling throughout the city today, but especially to the Southeast area of D.C., around the Navy Yard, please use extreme caution until more information has been reported on this situation.

Is this the place with the huge wave pools and water tanks where they test ship & submarine designs?
Wait I thought you couldn’t own guns in DC?
I was thinking of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, totally not the same place.
 …
You forgot about the exemption for criminals.
Watching the live feed… 4 killed, 8 wounded. Gunman either taken into custody or killed.
My sister works as an engineer for NAVSEA - it’s the same Command Headquarters for the Command that she works for, but she’s not at this location in the District… jeezuz
Not cool.
Wait wait wait…you’re telling me that criminals didnt turn them in?!
Now thats not fair :roll2:
Real life NCIS episode?
"“I used to work in Washington, live in Washington. This seems so unusual to me that a gunman could create this kind of havoc at a U.S. military facility,” Costello asked her producer, Brian Todd. “Have you ever heard of this happening before, Brian?”
Are you serious? :ham:
That is about on par for today’s journalism.
At least 13 dead… potential ID on one of the shooters

Oh course he was from Texas. They’ve said he had a pistol, rifle and shot gun. Impressive handling skills. :-/
‘long gun’
‘saw a guy with a shotgun’
‘pistol’
They’re just covering all bases in the media to better ‘arm’ future gun law debates, naturally.

The suspected gunman was identified by the FBI as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old civilian contractor from Queens, N.Y., who most recently resided in Fort Worth, Texas.
The U.S. Navy said Alexis was a full-time reservist from 2007 to 2011. He left the Navy on Jan. 31, 2011, as a petty officer 3rd class and had been working for the fleet logistics support squadron No. 46 in Fort Worth.
Washington Mayor Vincent Gray said Alexis was shot during an exchange with a Metro Police officer.
Alexis was arrested in Fort Worth in 2010 for discharging a firearm in city limits, police records show. Charges were never filed.

Do any of the personnel on our military installations carry firearms? I mean after all, they are the friggin military. You would think if anyone is prepared to get into a gunfight, it’s our own damn soldiers?!
