Anyone familiar with Motec ECU Manager?

Helping a buddy of mine out, the car he just bought has a Motec M48 it’s one of the older ones, essentially the same as an M4. He asked me to help him get his laptop for the car all setup so he can run the diagnostics and stuff.

Was wondering if anyone here is familiar with Motec’s ECU manager software? or if there’s anyone local that he’d be able to contact should any problems arise now or in the future? He’s just looking at running diag stuff for now so nothing crazy, the tune should be solid but the PO was a bit of a dolt so he wants to look everything over to ease his mind before he starts driving it around.

The only real question I have right now is does anyone know if Motec’s generally require a special cable to connect? His laptop has a serial port and he showed me a picture of his ECU and there is a cable coming out of it that looks like a serial port as well (he is going to check tonight). We have both read the manual and agree the language is a bit unclear as to whether any cable will work or if a specific one is required. It doesn’t reference any Motec part #'s, so we’re leaning towards the serial cable doing the trick but if anyone knows otherwise from experience it’d be nice to know before we sit down in his garage with high hopes.

Thanks, any and all help would be much appreciated.

Morgan @ Synapse has some experience with these systems.

contact John Reed of John Reed Racing. hes a MoTeC wizard, im sure he could lead you in the right direction

Thanks for the replys, now just hoping it warms up so we can start playing with it soon.

Im familiar with spoon engines, t66 turbos with nos, and motec system exhausts if that helps.

Yeah thanks, that’s what I was looking for, looks like my man have to drop a few $$$ on a cable from motec after all. Not surprising really, unfortunate the PO failed to include it in the sale if that is indeed the case.

Solid fnf reference Ollie :lol

I have an m4e which was setup by me and tuned by morgan, we uaed a regular serial tO usb cable.

Alright good to hear, thanks. We’ll be out there plugging it in tomorrow hopefully the temps stay up so we can start it up.

Easy system to use, ur gonna tune it on a dyno correct?

It’s been tuned, should be solid, buddy just purchased it and wanted to get familiar with the software for running diagnostics.
