Jack, what would one look for if they wanted a diesel under 10k? Examples help…I’m interested in this as I believe my xterra is on its last legs
I just checked autotrader myself. Minimum 10 years old and 175k if you want to stay under $10k. Ehh…
People towing boats would be crazy to get anything but a 4x4, boat ramps are steep and slippery
Yep. I had to yank a guy up the ramp when his 2wd pickup couldn’t get any traction on the wet slimy ramp. The majority of time 2wd is fine on the ramp because I can feel when my truck’s auto 4wd engages and it almost never does. Once and a while though the wind/waves/weeds come together just right to make that first 4-5 feet of ramp barely better than ice. Those rare times when you’re stuck there like an asshole makes 4wd worth it for boat towing.

+nitrous for the hills. :mamoru: Though I’m not positive you’d need it. That 300ci I6 is like an offensive lineman (not from the Bills) It’ll run a 10 second 40 or a 9.9 second 40 pulling a semi.
My step dad pulled our 25ft 5th wheel with the same set up. infact sold it to my neighbor, drove it intill 250k and then crashed it.
I would stay away from fords early 6.0s unless you like removing the cab and doing head gaskets.
I think I early 7.3 PSD would me more than plenty. 1994 was the first year of the 7.3 PSD might as well find a turbo model. I’ve have been finding clean stuff in NC and down by ultradriver in TX. needless to say its a 12 hour difference.
ex) 1994 7.3 PSD 165k new batt alt injection pump tires ect 4x4 ext cab asking $4000.
Or This…
I could go on and on, but I am 100% telling you to consider Diesel.
:word:
Great examples. The 7.3s are cheaper than Duramax trucks… Hop onto the diesel forums, you’ll get less BS in those classifieds.
Trailblazer ftw. My father tows our 5000lb. compressor with his Trailblazer all the time. We are both very impressed at how well it tows it.
im in the same boat here, im in need of a truck/suv that can tow.
this seams like a great deal for a good price i think.
I used to tow with a grand cherokee and it was awful. yes it was “rated,” and it “made it,” but I could barely move up hills, emergency braking was scary, etc.
now tow with my business partners 97 f250 diesel with the 7.3, last model year for that bodystyle.
towing a full car is a pleasure now, barely know it’s there. mileage isn’t too much worse towing, though without a load it’s not too great either (~16 range I think? Only use it towing really to be honest).
Tow cars through the PA hills all the time, didn’t even notice my m3 on there
pick up an old diesel from down south. $120 flight and a couple hundred in gas and you’ve got a rust free vehicle
The thing with the Avalanche, cause my neighbor has one, is it isn’t all that functional. It appears to be, but it isn’t a truck, it is an SUV with less cargo room, and a truck with less functionality. My neighbor is not happy with his, so his wife drives it, and he borrows my trailer when he needs to move something.
7.3 Ford Diesal is the best tow vehicle for under $10k in my opinion, I have a bunch of friends with them, they are awesome. As far as towing 4500#'s though, you obviously don’t need one though.
My dad has the SOHC 2V 5.4, fuck that thing. Don’t waste your time with it, I can elaborate if you want. The 05 up F-150s have pretty shitty suspensions too if you went that route, nicer ride though.
If not the diesal ford, I’d probably go with a chevy gas V8, good power, reliability, and ease of working on. All the company’s have good diesals, but I have only driven newer duramax’s that would be over 10k.
The chevy inline 6 in the trailblazers would be good, and speaking of inline 6’s, Ford’s 4.9 is awesome, those old fords are great work trucks.

Yeah 5k pounds with a diesal will barely be noticeable as far as acceleration and mpg.
It is a lot more than engine, suspension and brakes are what makes it safe or not.
Ultradriver and I towed his vette across country with the new expedition with 6sp auto, we were towing half this things capability and I can’t even imagine towing the max. We almost killed the transmission, it was not behaving well. You don’t want to end up with something that can tow 5k pounds, but with quite the sacrifice to the vehicle’s reliability.
Heads up for those looking for a nice tow vehicle, http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/1980708805.html
southern car + diesel = long life
Has reese beast tow hitch and a ball for a goose neck. It folds down flush to.
The Ford will tow great.
The Dodge will also do a good job, 2x the price.
The problem with all of the Dodge trucks is they rot really fast no matter how well you “rust proof” it. I would give it 2 Buffalo winters before you see rust starting on every wheel arch. Why bring it here and destroy it, also you could find a Chevy or a Ford in that condition and mileage for less and they don’t rot as fast.
You can find 7.3 Fords around here with 200k for way less than $9500. They tow awesome too.
Chevy Silverado 1500HD. Wasn’t aware they made an HD version of the 1/2 ton body. Anybody know anything about them or have experience with them? 6.0L V8, crew cab, 4x4, poor gas mileage, good towing capacity according to the specs.
