Easy solution. Most the same vendors are at art and music festivals throughout the year. Go to those, usually cheaper food prices, free admission into festival, and no carnie scum.

I have to admit I like people watching at the fair. It makes Splash Lagoon look like Park Country Club.
Unfortunately it has already passed but the Chautauqua county fair makes the Erie county fair look like the park lane country club.
