Suspect Barricaded in Storm Drain Beneath 405 Freeway
KTLA News 9:43 AM PDT, June 16, 2009 (KTLA-TV)
LOS ANGELES – A portion of the southbound 405 Freeway has been shut down for several hours in the Van Nuys area after a burglary suspect barricaded himself inside a storm drain beneath the roadway.
All southbound lanes were closed at Roscoe Blvd. just after 3 a.m., creating a traffic backlog that stretched for several miles.
Two lanes later reopened, allowing traffic to slowly pass through the area.

Police were initially chasing two suspects accused of robbing a nearby warehouse on the west side of the freeway.
One suspect was taken into custody but another jumped into a storm drain that runs underneath the freeway.
Police told KTLA that the suspects may have been after copper wiring inside the vacant business.
The warehouse owner said he originally received word that there was a water main problem inside the building, but he later realized two men were inside.
Police, along with K-9 units, were searching the building for any additional suspects.
Officers have been working for more than five hours to talk the suspect out of the storm drain, which also has an opening on the northbound side of the freeway.
The man is apparently refusing to come out, saying he has a newborn baby at home and does not want to be taken into custody.
Los Angeles City Fire crews, including an Urban Search and Rescue unit, were aiding in the efforts.
There was no word on when the freeway would fully reopen.
