There are no more flip up light cars in production as the last ones were the C5 vette and the Lotus Esprit.
Doesn’t look like any more will ever be in production, as they were created in a day when the headlights had to be oblong, boxy and ugly to they created a method to hide them. Now with headlights being in crazy shapes and part of modern designs, they won’t go nowhere, especially with the creation of LED headlights.
The irony all was that while in the daytime the slant nose and hidden lights would make the car look clean and attract attention the illusion would be ruined and the wrong kind of attention would be attracted when there was any kind of fog or condensation that would require you to turn the lights on, as the headlights in use ruin the lines of the car.
So to give respect to a very innovative and peculiar design we’re giving them an official farewell by showcasing a few highlights.
And none of what you said defines a supercar. Exotic, yes. Supercar, most certainly not.
Dont’ forget: FD3S, FC3S, MA70, SW20, the other MR2 for which I dunno the chassis number, old muscle cars like the Daytona, Superbird, TA, etc… and quite a few other semi-iconic cars.
Doubt I’d list them all, just top 10 and the bike.
If you have any ideas on your own list feel free to add some contenders.
As far as the term
During the late 20th century, the term Supercar was used to describe “a very expensive, fast or powerful car with a centrally located engine”,[8] and stated in more general terms: “it must be very fast, with sporting handling to match”, “it should be sleek and eye-catching” and its price should be “one in a rarefied atmosphere of its own”
Yessir, I thought the reference was obvious enough without needing a workcited.
The problem is that there is a supercar, an exotic car, and a sports car.
In general the consensus is if a car has any bone it it to make your commute easier, or gives weight advantages to safety features that are not required by law like extra airbags, or rear seats.
They have to handle well, go fast and look like a spaceship on exterior and interior. They cannot resemble the average car. They also have to have a price similar to a space shuttle. Generally they are mid engine, RWD.
There are also Hypercars which is a relatively new term.
So a bentley is an exotic, a Viper ACR is a sports car and a Gallardo, whether I like to admit it or not, is a super car.
The countach back in the day, looked like a spaceship, cost out this world and performed to the benchpark. It is the car that 10 year olds will refer to as a supercar when you put it next to any other car of the age or before.
