How to find a vehicles production #'s

There are a lot of knowledgeable members on here, hence why I ask this.
Without the help of the manufacturer, they’ve never released production numbers, is there a way to figure out the production run of a certain model?

There has been a “discussion” on another forum and someone has posted some production numbers of a car.
I inquired where they got them from, they replied;
“Way too many sources to list. I manage a database of car info with lots of interesting nuggets. if you have sources indicating contradictory numbers please feel free to share. I’m always open to corrections.”
He then states, “I got it by farming registered US VINS with the national registry. The actual number I came up with is 52,835 for valid JHMED9 vehicles. Do you have a more accurate number to provide?”

I call Bullshit.
But I’m asking, can it be done?

There has to be a source somewhere but it might not be a publicly accessible one.

I did a quick source search because there are several websites out there that have 300zx production numbers listed, but none of them cite where they got the information. One says “From Nissan Microfiche” which is quite vague.

This guy is being very vague and speaking in general terms, as you can see above in my post.
How would one even do this?

But, why?

This just occurred to me…

“I manage a database of car info with lot of interesting nuggets.”

… He’s an employee at the DMV, lol.

.

'cmon it’s not that early in the morning guys… why would anyone care about production numbers? Because they want to know how rare or common their vehicle is.

That or he suspects a troll and wants to call him out.

Just sounds like vette owner bullshit.

Well, my car is the atomic orange with the 4LT that came with the CC3 glass roof with the Q44 wheels so it’s one of 865 for the 2012 production year…

easy there buddy

Must be the JDM factor.

Your Atomic Orange thing go off?
(still my favorite C6 color)

More like CRX bullshit

Maybe they’re arguing about how many are still on the road vs. how many have gone to the crushers :gotme:

Ugh, not enough.

+Rep lol

You’re on the right path, I’m looking to call the guy out on his BS spiel, and folks are getting sick of his “On a pedestal, know it all attitude.”

Well most of what I’ve read says that you need to request the info from the DMV. Just tell them you’re doing research for a school project or something.

Without help from the manufacturer it’s a hell of a job; only way I can even fathom is getting access to national DMV or NHTSA records.

But even with that, not all information is available.

Case in point - My Formula; I know it’s 1 of 473 WS6s made in 1997, with the WS6 conversion done by SLP. BUT… because this was the last year SLP was doing the conversions, and they lost the contract to ASP for the 98-02 conversions they said fuck-it and didn’t record the order of the conversions (So there is no way to say what # the car is out of the 473). I’ve tried, and even used my contacts at GM and some other contacts at SLP to get more info; the info simply doesn’t exist.

On certain niche cars I have reviewed excel spreadsheets listing the car with what options shows how many were produced to those matching specs. On a massive production car I would bet near impossible to determine.

That’s what I can’t figure out. Even then, they won’t just hand out random VIN’s to anyone inquiring about them?

This is the work the member has posted…

Year:1988 Units:18054 First VIN: JHMED9360JS000003 Last VIN:JHMED9361JS018056 NextVIN:JHMED9363JS018057

Year:1989 Units:18735 First VIN: JHMED9362KS000005 Last VIN:JHMED9365KS018739 NextVIN:JHMED9361KS018740

Year:1990 Units:14009 First VIN: JHMED9363LS000001 Last VIN:JHMED9361LS014009 NextVIN:JHMED9368LS014010

Year:1991 Units:14447 First VIN: JHMED9361MS000001 Last VIN:JHMED9361MS014447 NextVIN:JHMED9363MS014448

Total 1988-1991 CRX Si production 65,245 +/- 5

Note: There is a discrepancy between the carfax database and the Honda database on the 1991 Si model. The Honda database says the last 91 Si VIN is: JHMED9364MS014443 Looks like the current margin of error is +/- 5

You can actually test the VINS against HONDA’s own database by entering the VINS at this link:

You can manually verify the data with a script or by hand at this link.

The VINS are sequential. These numbers do not include the HF or DX models.

I also cross checked the VINS of 119 sold CRX Si’s over the last 2 years on Ebay and none of them fell outside the published ranges above.

To figure out the 9th position or Check Value Digit or the value after “JHMED936”:

1)Assign a value to letters in the VIN: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, P=7, R=9, S=2, T=3, U=4, V=5, W=6, X=7, Y=8, Z=9. (any numbers in the VIN retain their value so a 3=3 or 4=4)

2)Assign a value to all positions of the VIN, besides the 9th position (the check digit itself):
1=8, 2=7, 3=6, 4=5, 5=4, 6=3, 7=2, 8=10, 10=9, 11=8, 12=7, 13=6, 14=5, 15=4, 16=3, 17=2.

  1. Multiply the value obtained in step 1 with the value obtained in step 2 for each of the 16 places in the VIN.

  2. Find the sum of the 16 values obtained in step 3.

  3. Divide the sum in step 4 by 11. Round the value of the digits to the right of the decimal up. This is the check digit number. If the value is 10 the check digit is an X.

Example 1: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.72 Check digit is 8
Example 2: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.00 Check digit is 0
Example 3: Value obtained in step 5 is 29.92 Check digit is X
