Local places to fix 18V rechargable battery?

I’m a click away from buying a new battery for $50 for my Worx GT Weed Wacker…but am wondering if there are local places that can refurb these batteries? I left it plugged into the charger over the winter and now it only gives me about 5 minutes before it takes a shit on me…

This would be helpful to know for sure.

I read on a forum about a year ago that guys were taking apart the battery, then just ordering the part numbers of the cells inside the battery pack on ebay.

Some guys were even putting in batteries that would last longer.

I was planning on buying a battery pack that has been upgraded by one of those guys. For $50, I’d rather give them the money rather than me spending the time figuring all the details of out on how to do this. However, if there was a local place that does this that would def be nice to know.

In Minnesota, we had a place called Batterys Plus that offered services like this…but google wasn’t able to find this in Buffalo:(

The batteries are the same size “sub c” cells used in RC cars.

I have dewalt batteries I hav ebeen meaning to rebuild forever, but have not bothered to find decent cells.

I’m willing to bet if you take those screws out you can access the actual battery and find a replacement yourself far cheaper than $50.

My cordless air compressor I’ve had for about 8 years stopped holding a charge. The battery isn’t supposed to be a replaceable item but after removing 8 screws the case splits and it was sitting right there. The wires were soldered on to tabs but 30 seconds with my soldering iron and the battery was out. Then I went here, http://www.apexbattery.com/ put in the battery info and got an exact replacement for about a 1/3rd of the cost of a new compressor.

Same story with a beard trimmer I have. After about 3 years it stopped holding a charge. It was around $40, but I’m a cheap bastard who doesn’t like our disposable society so I took the one screw out and found a single C cell NIMH soldered in there. Radio Shack had the same battery in a two pack for $5 and it took me less than 5 minutes to remove and replace the cell.

The dewalt cells I have are all cardboard wrapped with no discerable info :frowning:
Good link…
Got the info i needed

Amp-Hour 2200 maH

Those typically have like 12-1.5v cells, and it’s usually one or two cells that go bad, by getting deep drawn by the other good cells.

Ya take it apart and measure the voltage to each cell and you’ll probably find one or two with way less voltage than the others, replace those and you’re golden, but then you have to worry about the new cells deep discharging the good old ones. It’s better to replace all the cells at once.

I had a ryobi lithium I left in the rain and when I took it apart there was a ton of insulating foam stuck to the cells. In the end I didn’t fix it. They definitely made it hard to work on.

Good luck

I got lucky, my compressor uses the same 12volt wet cell that verizon uses for battery backup of their fios boxes. When the fios guy was installing it he showed me the battery and was surprised when I had the exact same battery already sitting on a shelf.

I just took apart one of my snap on batteries and found that one of the terminal ends was corroded from the battery, so I resoldered it on and now it’s charging. Thanks for the inspiration

Good info fellas…I’ll see what I can find with this thing this afternoon before I order up anything:tup:

there is a battery place on NF Blvd just north of the 290 that does rebuild batterys if you decide to go that route,
the Battery Center or something…

Interstate all Battery Center on military ave in kenmore. rebuild batteries. I always here about them on the radio, and they say they carry types
of batteries and repaired rechargable batteries for power tools.

Theres this place on Niagra Falls BLVD further down from Buffalo Roadhouse and AJ’s Grand Prix on the same side right by Walmart

United/ Richter electric on Michigan by the arena is where I usually go. Not sure if they service that make though. That looks similar to a dewalt or ryobi battery. There is a dewalt store in buffalo, if it is made by dewalt they might warranty it. If it’s a ryobi, you might be able to buy one on the cheap at Home Depot or Lowes. Maybe take it to one of those stores and see what fits.
