OBD (vpw) to rs232

hey… anyone on here with techincal knowledge of OBD (vpw) to rs232’s? i don’t feel like spending like 100 bucks on a freaking wire…

anyway i know with my car my obdii is interfaced with ISO 9141… but i was reading up and think i can use ELM 323 because it transparently converts between the 10.4KHz ISO data stream and standard ASCII characters.

anyway… someone let me know if i’m way off before i start buying connectors and wires… i just want to play with my car and not spend 100 bucks for somthing that’s worth about 20.

oh…

also i was thinking that i could interface older cars and simple codes by simply making an elm322… i can just use a 300 mil plastic for DIP format, or a 208 mil SOIC for a surface mount type. i figure this shouldn’t be too hard, with older cars you have to worry about proper grounds and diodes to drop the voltage rate. this is why i think with my newer vw it’ll support the elm323 which is basically the elm322 with ISO transfer capibilty.

i’m just babbling at this point… someone shed some light if you can.
