poker dealer is NOT a regular dealer. At the small money games, dealers make $1-3/hand on average. At a big money game it’s $5 average/hand. A good dealer can go 30-40 hands/hr. Do the math.
What else do you want to build downtown? A new place for the Bills to play? That will be empty b/c they wont be around by the time it’s done.
We can’t completely look at Canadian casinos as examples, since the laws governing thier operations are different than ours. I would guess the amount of tourism they had before casinos was much higher than ours as well.
I have a idea how about we keep all the buildings boarded up for another 30 years as we plan another idea other then the casino.
You guys kill me. What does this city have to lose? Jack fucking shit, this place is a joke because people are so fucking against change here… As the world moves on every year, it seems Buffalo takes another step back.
This just implies that Buffalo is one happening spot, and it isn’t. Touting anything as a cure-all is not only stupid, but wasteful.
That’s the only HUGE gripe that I have. There has to be some planning. The Niagara Falls casino was very poorly planned, and look…the city is kind-of, sort-of doing better than it once was. I hate people that say, “lets just build it!” NO! Lets at least have a logical plan.
It doesn’t seem like the government and the Senecas like to talk to eachother. This could be one big mess. One big mess that makes the casino, and not Buffalo, the attraction. The one in Niagara Falls is like a pit stop on the way to greener pastures…
You’re absolutely right. A casino is definitely no the answer to all of the economic woes. But its a step in a direction that will bring money into the community.

thats kinda sorta better than sticking with the status quo isn’t it? shoot, they even re-opened the water park in NF due to the casino.

The problem is that NO PLAN has ever been agreed to, let alone implemented. For example, THE TWIN SPAN BRIDGE.
WNY has been in a state of wait for the last 3 decades.
My only concern is look at the statistics for those who gamble…they are mainly the poor people trying to make a quick buck. Families that really can’t afford to gamble will be drawn in with high hopes of winning some extra cash.
it’s all in how the casino is built, developed and presented. The problem with indian casinos is that there’s no free market to create competition. State bans on gambling in general are stupid, especially when you cut the corner and allow indian nations to put them up. A buffalo city casino would be entirely different, if the indians are willing to approach the project as a marriage between themselves and the city, I’m all for it. If they want to approach it as a cash cow for themselves, I’m very against that. Corporate social responsibility is IMO one of the most important factors in business.
We need new blood in the legislature. A Casino is a great idea. This would bring much more tourism into Buffalo and more small businesses would prosper from this. Also, look at the falls. Politcal fuckers refused a casino in the falls too years ago…the best thing you can do is go and see the water fall…see a few chipmuncks screwing in the trees and thats about it. Look at Clifton hill and how it is exploding. All these businesses from Niagara Falls packed up and left. We need legislature to be more open minded and provision future expansion not just to collect a paycheck and fuck everything else.
I think this more than anything would have been the key to saving downtown. Thousands of kids that are in the area needing places to stay and shop, as well as looking for food, entertainment and jobs 24/7.
Since that obviously isnt an option now, I see nothing wrong with trying anythign else to get people and jobs into the city. I have no problem with a bass pro, I have a problem with them not doing it. I have no problem with a casino, I have a problem with them not even trying. Little by little, everything is done half assed or not at all.
Personally, I would love to see the old Terminal remodeled as a casino/hotel. It is historic to buffalo, needs further renovation anyway, has the ability to provide train service directly to the location, and would force the city to revitalize that decaying neighborhood. It would cause increased police presence, lighting, new roads, parking, construction etc.
Anything is better than nothing at this point, what are they going to lose, all of their telemarketer jobs in the suburbs?
