PCI slot & video card question

I need to get a video card (GeForce 3 or equivalent) for our old computer (a Dell Dimension 4600). All of the newer cards that Best Buy carries require a PCI-Express slot. I’m pretty sure I only have PCI.

  1. I checked the system devices and see PCI bus - I guess that means standard PCI?

  2. I assume the newer cards won’t work on a regular PCI slot?

  3. If yes to both of those, I was going to look for an older nVidia card with 128MB. Sound ok?

Thanks.

No AGP slot either?

The only place you’re gonna find old shit like that is eBAY…

Uhhh… I don’t know…

I guess it should have an AGP port. How can I tell what it looks like?

edit: found a picture showing the different slots. I’ll open it up and see what’s available.

The AGP slot will look something along these lines:

In that same picture those white slots are standard PCI slots. The AGP is usually brown and sometimes has a tab on the front end of it.

Guess I should have done some looking before posting (or at least opened the owner’s manual).

Yeah, there’s an open AGP slot. Anything about my system that would limit which card I can use?

Depending on what type of AGP port it is, 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x. How old is the Dell, and do you have any documentation for it? I’m guessing it’s a 4x port. Just don’t buy too tip top of the line AGP card and you’ll be set.

It’s from January 2004. The specs in the manual say AGP 1X, 4X, 8X, and the controller says AGP8X. I think I know what to look for now.

All because my daughter’s Pet Vet 2 won’t run (and I don’t want to clutter up our new computer).

Maybe this one?

get that one. thats not bad at all and the price is pretty decent. AGP>PCI(Non-Express)

That’ll do a great job.

This 9550 is passively cooled so it won’t be noisy, it’s also a bit faster in newer apps:

huh “passively cooled” as in no fan? faster?

my new video card does not have a fan. :dunno:

It has not blown itself up yet, so it must work.

yeah no shit… i’m curious as to how a video card is ‘faster’ with new apps… ?

I was confused by the passively cooled and faster apps thing too…

Why not just say it has a heatsink but no fan?

I know computers is not your cup of tea, so I thought I would help you out a little.

I am guessing he is saying that this card is faster than the other one posted. :dunno:

??? i’m confused why it even matters after reading jeff’s initial post…

That should work great for ya…

Man, I’m always starting trouble…

damn you
