Pulled out the D40 for the first time in months. Have no idea what Im doing with it. Had the kit lens and some cheap-o wide lens attachment that screws on to the end of it. Need to really learn what I’m doing any play with some editing instead of just uploading them to photobucket
Two weeks ago, took the Crv up a decent trail near Kingston. Here it is at the peak, that overlooks i87. That is the moon in the background, but it didnt show up nearly as well as I hoped. Didnt have my filter with me though, and lots o’ sun.

My dog, Bella the Dalmatian, legit smiles. She’s not very photogenic though. Every time I try to take a pic she stops and puts her head down. Jim and Vlad can vouch lol.
i wouldnt call that smiling. shes doing her elvis impersonation. ya know the stick up the upper lip thing.

When I first read about the MARDI camera I was really excited – it would take video as the rover descended at about 4 frames per second so that the NASA people would have a good idea about where Curiosity was and would help them plan it’s next moves once it was on the surface.
So here we are just 24hrs later and here’s the ‘video’ back from Curiosity – it’s not very impressive taken out of context but what is most interesting is how it looks pretty much exactly like I would imagine it would and exactly like the computer simulations – at the end of the video you can even see the rockets fire in the final stage of the descent (least, I’m pretty sure that’s what it is and NASA don’t have much info on this as yet)
The full video “will just be exquisite,” said Michael Malin, the chief scientist of the instrument.

<b>[Mars Curiosity Rover Landing Sequence](https://simotron.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/5824/)</b> Landing something as big as a decent-size car on Mars is pretty complex and not all of these stages have been tried before – check out the Sky Crane part and the flyaway controller that puts Curiosity on the surface and then flies off to crash itself.
“After the rover touches down it waits 2 seconds to confirm that it is on solid ground and fires several pyros (small explosive devices) activating cable cutters on the bridle and umbilical cords to free itself from the descent stage. The descent stage flies away to a crash landing, and the rover gets ready to roam Mars. The planned sky crane powered descent landing system has never been used in missions before.”

Take a moment to drink this one in. It was stitched together from a few photos as the shots were taken over a period of time and needed to be joined but it’s real – it’s a real place millions of miles away from where you are sitting. Image is by NASA with work by Marscat. I cropped it a little and the original is here, this has been around since 2006 but it still blows my mind.

Copernicus is 93 kilometers wide and is located within the Mare Imbrium Basin, northern nearside of the Moon (10? N, 20? degrees W.). Image shows crater floor, floor mounds, rim, and rayed ejecta. Rays from the ejecta are superposed on all other surrounding terrains which places the crater in its namesake age group: the Copernican system, established as the youngest assemblage of rocks on the Moon.
