SHAMOKIN – A 17-year-old boy is accused of firing a pellet gun at a man dressed as Santa Claus, causing a minor injury.
“Who in the world would shoot Santa Claus?” Shamokin Chief of Police Richard Nichols said. “Here is a volunteer who supports the community by playing Santa Claus and ends up getting shot with a pellet. This is really sad.”
The boy, who police said would be charged today, has confessed to firing the pellet that struck Scott Slodysko, 23, in the thigh Monday night. At the time Slodysko, a volunteer fireman, was dressed as Santa while riding atop a Friendship Fire Company fire truck.
“We were at the intersection when I heard a popping sound,” Slodysko said. “It felt like a bee stung me – like a very bad bee sting.”
Slodysko said he knew immediately that somebody with a pellet gun was to blame.
“I used to have one, so I know what they’re like,” he said. “But I sure never was shot by one.”
Slodysko’s injury did not require him to go to a hospital or miss work. He described the wound as “a black-and-blue mark about the size of a silver dollar” and said it made it difficult for him to sleep. He said the attack won’t stop him from portraying Santa next year.
“We do this for the kids. I like to see kids smiling and having fun,” Slodysko said. “I just can’t believe someone would do something like that.”
The boy fired the pellet from a second-story window, police said. Nichols commended the officers who were assigned to the case for finding the boy so quickly.
“They did a great job in finding out who was responsible for the despicable act, and we will take him to task,” Nichols said. “Hopefully, justice will be swift and unmerciful.”
