I am going to do a H/C/I swap this spring. I want to order the AFR SBC 195 Street Heads. But there are two versions. 1040 which is used with straight bolts for the intake manifold. And 1041 which is used with angle bolts for the newer TPI intake manifolds.
[FONT=Verdana]The intake I am most likely going with is the Holley Stealth Ram. But there are two versions also. Part #61-7540 Holley StealthRam Intake Manifold & Base Plate. And part #61-7542 Holley StealthRam Intake Manifold & Base Plate for Vortec style Cylinder Heads.
wouldnt the straight bolts be the pre 87 (non vortec) so you would go with the non vortec intake? or the opposite for if you wanted the vortec option? im confused, what exactly do you want to know? which is more prefered or which goes with which?
Me too, haha. I want to make sure the intake manifold will bolt to the heads ok. I imagine if I got the 1040’s which is used with straight bolts for the intake, and my intake manifold used angle bolts I’d have issues…?
the old style sbc heads are straight at least they are on my motor (79’) so I would get the #1040 and the Part #61-7540 Holley StealthRam Intake Manifold & Base Plate.
are TPI heads and vortec heads the same? I don’t think so but I am not sure, TPI is before LSx and vortec is LSx, right?
You want AFR # 1040, these are traditional SBC intake pattern & angle. AFR #1041 would be for 88+ L98 engine that had the inner two manifold bolt going at a different angle then the outer bolts.
The Holley Stealth ram you want is std. SBC not Vortec. Vortec heads are for 96+ iron headed Vortec 350 engines and also for GM Performance Parts fast burn heads. Vortec heads use plastic/rubber intake manifold gaskets and only have 8 bolts total (4 per cylinder head)
TPI heads are NOT Vortec heads.
Vortec heads are Vortec heads and GM Performance Parts Fast burn heads use a Vortec manifold also
word of advice call afr on your head choice. If its going on a 350 they dont recommend the 195cc heads for street use. I have the 180cc ones on my 350 with a comp cams magnum 280hr and the motor setup screams for a stock block 350.
My L98 is a 1988. So I wouldn’t I need the 1041’s? But if I’m changing the intake, it shouldn’t matter then right? Thanks to everyone for the help!

I don’t know. A lot of guys are getting the 195s on their L98s, and milling them down to 60cc to keep compression up. Combined with a HSR, cam, and a stall, they are making good numbers.
^^^who cares about streetability. hell im planning to get a set of these but im debating between the 210 and 227 cc ones. btw, great choice of heads youll love them.
AFR 195’s are pretty much the gold standard of alum. sbc heads.
I thought long and hard about buying them and then went with brodix cause they were slighlty cheaper. I shoulda chose the afr’s
AFR came onto the scene in the mid 80’s and sent everyone back to the drawing boards. They re-did their entire lineup with the Eliminators and again, are sending everyone back to the drawing boards. For a street/strip head there is nothing better period. Once you get into specific very-high volume race-oriented pieces, then other manufacturers stuff comes into play.
Yeah you would only buy the 1041’s if you were keeping the stock TPI intake. The HSR only comes in Vortec and std. SBC pattern. AFR 1040 is what you want & stick with the 195s
Yea, I am keeping the 700r4. This is where things start to get expensive. I still have a stock stall and 2.77 gears. Gears would be gone if I didn’t have a 9 Bolt which is impossible to find parts for. I am going to try to do a stall (2800-3200) and gears (3.73) this year also.
In my defense. I just put the 180 afr heads on my car. Before i bought the heads i called afr and told them what i was doing with the car. I told them it was street car running pump gas. Told them the intake (edelbrock performer rpm) what kind of car it was in and rear gears and they recommended that i use the 180cc heads. they told me only way that the 195s would be a better street head was above about 6200rpm. Im sure the cast bottom end wouldnt have liked that kind of rpm for any length of time. To each there own. If you think the 195s will work well then use them i was just trying to help.
I got the same tranny in my 84 I believe. How much power can they handle? I still have a 350 short block I got back in like june. still sitting on my porch. I stripped it down to the bare block but its heavy as fuck so I never got around to moving it lmfao. I’m hoping to do something with it this summer. I would LOVE AFRs.
