Sony jumps of the IP filtering bandwagon

Not surprising since they’ve been pretty quiet from their last effort (rootkit)

Today, at the Broadband World Forum, the president of Sony Pictures urged ISPs to cooperate against piracy. Not exactly surprising to hear from a studio executive but it is still depressing to see more and more companies encouraging filtering by ISPs.

Sony is following in the footsteps of established anti-piracy lobbyists. The IFPI, for example, has been lobbying politicians to force ISPs to identify, filter, block and remove copyright infringing content from the Internet. For their part, the RIAA has suggested similar measures for the upcoming Anti-Piracy Trade Agreement Wishlist (ACTA).
