sorry about here being no updates. here’s a update/writeup on how i relocated my battery. I didn’t have enough money to buy all the wire to put it in the trunk and, being this is a FWD car, i wanted to keep the weight over the front wheels if possible. so here’s what i did.
taking the front end off
my first attempt was using the stock battery. that didn’t work because my wheel rubbed on the tray when i took a left turn. i believe if you have the stock wheels on the stock battery should work just fine.
i moved the battery inside the fender and made some minor adjustments to the battery tray. it clears the bumper and bumper cover just fine, but as said before, hits the wheel during a turn.
my next attempt was using a Deka battery. these weigh just 11lbs!!
to clear the front wheels i had to cut the battery tray to the size of the battery.
next i drilled and tapped holes in the frame to mount the tray. to hold the tray up, i cut a piece of steel with holes and twisted it.
upon setting the battery in, i noticed the hold down from my previous attemp wouldn’t hold this battery down, it was too small. fortunately, we have lots of scrap steel and i was able to find a peice of angle steel with holes in it. i cut this to the length of the battery. i then used the long hold down rods to secure the angle steel against the battery.
once i tightened it down, i gave the battery a few yanks just to see if it might fall out. the whole entire car moved up and down, so i dont think the battery is going anywhere!
Also, my rotors were warped, so while i had the car apart, i replaced them.
this is the bodywork i did on the car during the Fall. it took up a whole Saturday just to get the metal welded in.

next, i grabbed a piece of sheet metal and started cutting. i measured the size i would need for the right side, cut it out, and welded it on.
sorry, im new to welding and relatively new to body work.
once i had that welded and ground down i cut the piece for the underside.
i ground the welds down and applied a thin layer of tiger hair just to make sure no more water got in.
i did the same thing on the left side
also, i wanted to keep the black strip of rubber on the inner fender so that it looked like there was no bodywork done on the quarters. to do this, i had to re-make the metal lip
i did this on both sides. i dont know where the picture of the other side is, though.
now for the bondo and primer
down on the ground again. unfortunately, i have to wait until next spring to paint it. it’s just too cold right now.

Pics aren’t horrible at all. I think its freakin’ awesome that you are doing such a great job, being as young as you are, and on a budget … and doing things the right way. Keep up the amazing work …

Nice work Micah. Run the dump tube straight down and leave it open-- it will be simpler and make more power than a recirculated setup-- especially if your exhaust is on the small side.
Hey!! I was going to use that angle for the dyno mufflers!! I’ll send you the bill…
Body work doesn’t look too bad…but I would remove that weatherstrip immediately. I know it looks nicer, but that is the very reason it rusts in the first place. That rubber traps dirt and water inside and makes a very opportune place to start rusting. Seen it a billion times.
Yeah, and so much for my rule of “no working on cars on the dyno”…

nice job on the body work. but i vote for remove rubber peice. think that was the factory rust option you check off when you order it.
Well, it’s been a while since I last posted here. But since then I got my license and have driven the car quite a bit. It’s awesome!!! And it’s fast!! i recirculated the dump tube back into the down pipe and it is much more quite to drive. I love it. I also got the quarters painted and got some M/T street ET’s mounted on the stock 13’s. I/m going racing up at Sunset next Sunday and I cant wait!! here’s some pictures!
