Vid: Innovative Tuning Takes CSCS Triple Crown - CSCS Round 3

Bowmanville, ON, Canada July 28, 2013 - Round 3 of the Canadian Sport Compact Series held at Mosport DDT northeast of Toronto was history in the making. The last event before the track is torn down for redesign and expansion provided the opportunity to secure a lap record that will never be broken. This attracted the Can Jam sponsored Canadian Touring Car GS Class Subaru STI as well as the usual CSCS heavy hitters including James Houghton’s Teknotik sponsored Acura.

Mosport DDT is the most technical track hosting CSCS time attack competition, combining elevation change, blind corners, varied curbing, a high speed off camber downhill sweeper and complex offset uphill esses. Having never seen the track before, Innovative Tuning driver/owner Mike McGinnis was eager to take a peak. After a few recognizance laps, he ran a single hot lap in practice 1 which was almost 2 seconds quicker than the previous track record. Off to a solid start, but knowing he wouldn’t be the only one to surpass the mark set the year prior, he pushed harder in practice 2. With far more power than grip coming out of low speed corners, the Innovative Tuning unlimited AWD class time attack car was smoking the tires and putting on a show for fans. Unfortunately the six speed transmission wasn’t enjoying it. During P2 the syncros began locking out shifts so the car was parked to avoid further wear.

After some discussion of optimal line through the uphill esses with Innovative Tuning sponsored pro rally driver Chris Martin and considering sectors where shifts could be avoided without massive time penalty, a plan for the time attack session was set. Drive fast. Shift slow.

After watching another sold out field set their times, top qualifiers Houghton and McGinnis set off with a sprawling crowd onhand waiting to hear the new track record. As you’ll see in the video linked below, McGinnis stuck to the plan, improved his qualifying time despite the mechanical handicap, and once again set a time nobody could match.

Subsequent CSCS rounds in the 2013 championship season are repeats so in just 3 rounds Innovative Tuning has secured overall wins and CSCS lap records at all three tracks Canada’s biggest sport compact series visits. Look for their beast dubbed Voltron to step things up as they attempt to reset the TMP track record with the help of a front differential from their new sponsor Cusco at round 4.

I love the fact that you still set a new course record that no one could touch with a bad tranny.

Excuses excuses

Congrats man  When they change the track, set the new lap record and see how long it stands for

That thing moves.

+1… Seems like you’re so far ahead of your competition at this point that it’s not really a contest anymore.

Like when playing gran turismo and you finally got the escudo.

LOL I have more. I only ran 3 hot laps that day so I didn’t get to learn the track as well as I’d like. I ran the same set of tires I’ve used at all 3 CSCS events. I’m on DOT R compounds and the 2nd and third place cars were on slicks.

You never know. Guys are upgrading all the time and I haven’t made any big changes since the first CSCS event. When the GT-R race car comes back out after they replace the engine etc. I’m sure it will be quick. Sasha will get his ex Grand Am 350z back out with his new big engine and he’s a fantastic driver. The Subaru that had two of the records I broke has been down for an overhaul to make it faster and he’ll be back out soon too.

I have fresh tires ready in case I need them. I can also turn up the boost so hopefully I can finish out the year on top, but I definitely expect more competition. I can always screw up or something can break. Other fast time attack cars break things all the time.

Congrats again Mike!

Nice job Mike. Under 57 seconds is moving.

The tranny is rebuilt and back in the car. We’re waiting on a filter o-ring which should arrive Monday and then I’ll be ready for the next round.
