Years ago it was a sweet spot to ride but the way they take dirt and rock away now its no good to ride anymore.

Tripod is a must, that usually will solve most of the lighting related issues. Almost all point and shoot flashes are a joke and were not designed to be used if the object is more than 5’ away, and certainly not to cover a large area. Use a timer if your camera does not come with a remote shutter feature.
I was at the NYIAS last March and took all my shots with a cheap P&S with a tripod and no flash. All the shots turned out great.
