I was thinking I would eventually like to buy a hardtop convertible but I hate the way the cloth tops look when they are up. Only cars I can think of with hard tops are the Infiniti G37 coupe and the Lexus SC430. What other cars are there in this category?
well what kind of money are we talking about?
just about any newer car you can get a hard top for. only ones i dont think you can are vw’s, minis, chrysler pt’s. pretty much cars that were coupe/sedans and chopped into convertibles as an after thought. cars that were designed clean slate or were thought enough in advance to plan for a convetible option generally have a hard top option.
in general, im a fan of convertible cars w/ hard tops installed. if done right, they have a cleaner b post and a more defined c post/trunk line. have a open car for nice months, and most hardtops do well in winter. have best of both worlds.
in my opinion, the bmw e36 is the most graceful/best looking late model convertible car w/ the hard top on.
whats even better you can pick them up for cheap–under 5k. cars are pretty reliable.
pos stock e36–
as opposed to the convertible–
I also like the look of the s2000 w/ hardtops on it–especially some of the aftermarket hard tops. the spoon hardtop is hot. yet i see the bmw as being more practical. not that i wouldnt take an s2000
z3/mroadster hardtops look ok too. im trying to find an actual hardtop for mine.
just about any classic convertible will have a hardtop option too. my favorites are the bmw 507, the datsun 1600/200 roadsters are hot as hell w/ hard tops as are the healy 3000. both the datsun and healy are on my list of “classic” cars to own.
old healy-
and the datsun–
here is the bmw 507. hey go look at teh z3 above again this is the car that almost bankrupt bmw back in its infancy. cost to much to make, sold for 10k in the 50’s and they lost money on them.
oddly enough, two classic coupes i want are cars better known by their open top counterparts. i would love to have a jaguar xk120 or a series one e type.
xk120-
and e type
Um pretty much every luxury car company has a hard top convertible. Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infinit, and possibly Audi. Then Im sure GM has one in their lineup somewhere. Ford and Mopar Im not sure about though.
Well, I’m generally looking for something with a back seat and the hardtop being automatic folding, guess i should have specified that, I see that the G6 has that option which surprised me. The G37 is the best looking one IMO that i have seen so far, I looked at a BMW 335i hardtop vert and it just doesnt flow IMO. The sc430 is nice but more of a feminine looking car. Price range under $50k
eh
vw eos’s are hard top verts
audi a and s5’s have hard tops…
the audi’s are soft tops
The Volvo C70 Convertible has a hard top. I think it looks great with the top up and down.
I actually don’t mind the looks of the black soft top on my wife’ Sprint Blue Audi S4 Cab. A hard top would be nice though.
Does the c70 have good performance, thats also something I want in a car.
the c70 is kinda plain looking with the top up but with it down it does look good, for some reason it reminds me of a GTO. So far the G37 and C70 are my favorite HT Convs. the c70 has 218hp and 236tq which isnt bad but isnt great, unless it has some aftermarket support then it may have potential.
the bmw 335i is actually pretty nice too.
