So I bought this thing to be my DD, tore it apart to paint it, but then decided to go with something else. It’s mechanically solid (It has 76,500 miles!) minus the AC needs to be recharged with R12 and the hatch needs new pistons. Car is VERY clean for what it is. Previous owner did ghetto rust control, it’s ugly but it worked. Biggest issue is bottom of fenders and area by battery from acid leaking. It fires right up every time no hesitation, drives like a champ, and for having 68hp, it’s actually pretty peppy. (It only weighs 1500lbs.)
I love it!
Throw it up on

Hot damn this is sweet!
$1800 come get it! This is super cool. Come drive it, it’s pretty peppy with its 68hp because it’s so light…imagine 200hp in this thing!
$1,600. Time to do lifted jeep stuff for winter!
This is an updated version of the CVCC engine in my 78 and I agree that these cars are surprisingly usable/peppy because of the low curb weight. The 81 motor is rated with higher output than my 78 so I would expect this car to be even better. Redline and other vendors also sell Weber conversion kits (~$400 complete) that offer a power increase and make repairs/tuning a lot easier.
Unlike the pre-1980 cars, these second gens also use a 4x100 bolt pattern so finding nice vintage wheels (or knock-offs) is easy. Cool car, wish I had room for another one. Good luck.
