I thought they were one in the same. I have only wrenched on 1 Neon so I guess i need to look at them more.
let me explain how desirable these n/a motors are. we got an eclipse in on tuesday that was hit in the rear. front is mint, so nice that the entire front end is loaded as a nose, so only way u get it is to buy a front cut. the car got driven, tested etc etc. last night around 8 pm the car got it’s parts loaded into our inventory. by 12 noon today (wednesday) the motor sold for 1k.
im telling u, these motors for some reason hold their value. the turbo motors go for less.
i wound up buying the car… turns out that it does crank. i’m going to pull the head and have a machine shop check it out if i see no major problems. supposedly the car has a bad head gasket. anything i should know about that may pose a problem in pulling the head? am i able to pull the cams/cam gears without any special tools?
You’ll want to get a crankshaft pulley puller for chryslers, autozone rents them. The factory tool works a lot better than the generic 3 jaw dealies. Otherwise it’s pretty much nuts & bolts.
cool, thanks mike… from the fsm i’ve been reading i gathered the same thing. i also did a compression test last night, doesn’t look too good for the head, readings go
cyl 1 - 70psi
cyl 2 - 40psi
cyl 3 - 40psi
cyl 4 - 80psi
where normal range is between 170 and 225
i’m thinking the head is either cracked or warped. with that low of compression, i doubt its just the head gasket.
I tested my old DOHC car at 195-210-205-210 before I sold it.
If it has sat for a while the rings could be boogered up.
it hasn’t run for only like a week or two. did the oil compression test and a couple of the cyls raised significantly. motors junk, gonna start looking for a junkyard motor. sechrist told me they’d find me one for 900-1000. anybody know a better place?
wound up getting a junkyard motor from all foreign for 650. my boss got me a good hook up. i have the old motor almost out now, its just hanging by a snot. should have it out tomorrow night and maybe the new one bolted in.
