Mine was well abused, before i even got it. M50 with M52 cams untuned. The cooling was the first thing i attacked when i got it. Yeah i agree its not the car that is fail, its the owners.

What would be the most reliable BMW that came with a 4 cylinder motor and a five speed transmission? Something 1998+ or around there.

They are all fairly reliable. Like coldaccord said early M42’s (pre-'93) need their profile gasket replaced if it hasn’t been done already.
Why 4cyl?
